Hollywood Is Getting Wild: Earns Recertification As Community Wildlife Habitat & Mayor’s Chess Challenge
October 13, 2022 Share The City has again achieved recertification! The Community Wildlife Habitat program is designed to encourage property owners to create a habitat suitable for native species. Community-wide certification is earned by certifying individual properties (homes, parks, schools, businesses, and others), through education and outreach. Points are earned by engaging community members in habitat restoration projects, providing resources like native plant lists, and communicating through websites and social media. This year, the City earned points for restoring existing dunes on Hollywood Beach. These dunes provide a habitat for endangered plant species, as well as food and cover for native South Florida birds and butterflies. Points were also earned for educating the community about their carbon footprint and ways to reduce it. Outreach events like Earth Day and Food Waste Prevention Week further contributed to the City’s overall point total. But the City cannot earn this certification alone, we need residents to certify their own yard as a Backyard Habitat. A big thank you to everyone who is already providing host plants for our native butterflies, nectar for pollinators, berries and seeds for spring and fall migrants and places to raise young for our year-round residents and seasonal breeders! For those interested in certifying their property, it’s simple and you don’t even have to have a yard. A container garden on your patio or balcony can support pollinators and other native wildlife. To certify your wildlife habitat, you need to provide, food, water, cover, places to raise young (butterfly host plants count!) and use sustainable practices. For more details and to see the National Wildlife Federation’s certification checklist, go to National Wildlife Federation | Certify. 8th Annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge

  • Stop Hiding Fees! - The FTC Has Warned Dealers And This Free Online Tool Catches Them Doing It | sun-times

Stop Hiding Fees! - The FTC Has Warned Dealers And This Free Online Tool Catches Them Doing It South Florida Sun Times Apr 2, 2026 The Federal Government Just Put Nearly 100 Dealership Groups On Notice. On Friday, March 13th, 2026 The Federal Trade Commission Sent Warning Letters To 97 Auto Dealer Groups Across The Country, Telling Them In Plain Terms: The Price You Advertise Has To Be The Price Customers Actually Pay. No Hidden Fees Tacked On At Signing. No Mandatory Add-Ons Buried In The Paperwork. No Prices That Only Apply If You Use The Dealer’s Financing. For anyone who has ever sat in a finance office watching a $32,000 car turn into a $38,000 car, this is not a surprise. It’s great to see the FTC finally doing something about it. What the FTC Is Calling Out The agency’s letters flagged several specific practices it considers illegal under the FTC Act: • Advertising a price that doesn’t include all required fees • Advertising a price that reflects rebates not available to every buyer • Conditioning an advertised price on the customer using dealer financing • Requiring add-on purchases that aren’t reflected in the advertised price • Advertising vehicles that don’t exist or aren’t available The FTC also pointed to active enforcement cases it already has underway against Lindsay Chevrolet, Leader Automotive Group, and Asbury Automotive Group as examples of what happens when dealers don’t clean up their act. This is part of a broader FTC push on pricing transparency across multiple industries, but cars have long been one of the worst offenders. Anyone who has spent time at a dealership knows why. CarEdge Has Been Tracking This All Along Here’s what’s worth knowing: the behaviors the FTC is warning dealers about are exactly what CarEdge’s Dealer Transparency Index is built to measure. This AI agent contacts dealers on behalf of real car shoppers, collects itemized out-the-door quotes, and scores every dealer based on what they actually charge, not what they advertise. The scoring breaks down like this: Doc fees (30%) — Lower fees score higher. The benchmark is $499. Add-on behavior (30%) — Fewer mandatory add-ons score higher. Dealer markup (30%) — Lower dealer-controlled fees above the listing score higher. Data quality (10%) — Complete, detailed quotes score higher. The result is a 0–100 score for every dealer in our database. Some dealerships score a perfect 100. Others are in the 20s and 30s. The dealers at the bottom of our index aren’t just underperforming on a CarEdge metric. They’re doing the things the FTC is now formally warning the industry about. What This Means for Car Shoppers A warning letter from the FTC doesn’t mean dealers will immediately change their behavior. Enforcement takes time, and habits baked into a dealership’s F&I process don’t disappear overnight. That’s why having independent, data-backed ratings matters. Before you visit a dealership, you can check their Dealer Transparency score. This tool is 100% free. See their average doc fees. See how often they push mandatory add-ons. See how their out-the-door prices compare to what they advertise. The FTC is telling dealers they need to be honest. CarEdge tells you which ones already are. • Breeze Into Summer With BCT – Just Try It! - See More. Spend Less. Let Us Be Your Tour Guide! | sun-times

Breeze Into Summer With BCT – Just Try It! - See More. Spend Less. Let Us Be Your Tour Guide! By Jose Paz - BCT Aug 6, 2025 There’s A Special Kind Of Energy In Broward When Summer Rolls Around. Maybe It’s The Golden Sunsets Over The Coast, The Sound Of Flip-Flops Hitting The Pavement, Or Just The Way The Air Feels Lighter When School’s Out And The Days Stretch Longer. Whatever It Is, It’s The Perfect Time To Grab Your Friends, Your Sunscreen, And Surprise Your BCT Pass! This summer, a group of five friends made a simple decision that changed the way they explored their county: they tried the bus. At first, it was about saving money. With gas prices high and rideshares adding up, they looked for a better way to get around. What they didn’t expect was that Broward County Transit would become part of the adventure. With just $2 for a one-way fare or affordable all-day passes, hopping on board gave them the freedom to roam without worrying about parking, traffic, or draining their wallets. One morning, they caught Route 11 headed east and rode it all the way to Fort Lauderdale Beach. Windows down, music in their ears, and laughter in the air, they were tourists in their own city. They grabbed iced coffees along Las Olas, laid out their towels under a shady palm, and watched the waves roll in. Later, they checked the real-time app, found the next bus, and decided to ride up to the Galleria Mall for an impromptu shopping stop. It wasn’t just a ride; it was an experience. The buses were clean and air-conditioned, the drivers welcoming, and the schedule surprisingly easy to navigate. By the end of the week, the group had a new routine. Sunrise at the beach. Midday markets. Sunset photo ops. And BCT was with them every step of the way. So, if you’ve never tried riding with BCT before, consider this your invitation: Just Try It. Let us show you that public transit isn’t just about getting from Point A to Point B; it’s about discovering what’s in between. Let this be the summer you explore more and spend less. Ride BCT! • Introducing Maison La Fleur: An Emblem of Love, Beauty, and the Spirit of Valentine’s Day in Aventura

Introducing Maison La Fleur: An Emblem of Love, Beauty, and the Spirit of Valentine’s Day in Aventura Joyce R. Forchion February 7, 2022 Share Maison La Fleur is in full bloom in South Florida’s “City of Excellence,” creating an enchanting vision of unparalleled beauty amid the bustling Aventura ParkSquare community. Thanks to the efforts of its visionary founders– international photographer and creative director, Natalia Rousso; and marketing expert, Eyyub Jafarov - the luxury flower boutique’s aesthetic epitomizes the neighborhood’s evolution of juxtaposing scenic storefronts with metropolitan, mixed-use developments. With Valentine’s Day approaching, local residents are gifted with a destination that not only promotes the spirit of love throughout the year, but also serves as a picturesque work of art in its own right. Rousso and Jafarov founded Maison La Fleur in 2020 to introduce a classical European approach to contemporary floral arrangements pairing loose, organic techniques with intricate color theory. Their mission is to redefine and elevate the traditional flower shop experience. “What started as just a simple idea grew into something special and unique, and Eyyub and I are very proud of what we’ve built so far,” said Rousso. “Everything kind of fell into place; flowers dictated the name of the business and the location inspired the interior design elements. Any business is almost like a marriage, or a thread of ideas that has to form a big picture, so a lot of thought and effort from many truly talented individuals helped Maison La Fleur become a reality.” Rousso opened the store in Aventura to contribute to the neighborhood’s vibrant diversity. “Aventura is a wonderful city with amazing infrastructure. It’s a great place for young families and older individuals alike, so there’s literally something for everyone here,” she said. “It has great restaurants, salons, hotels, grocery stores-- it literally has it all. It’s hip, refreshing, and every other business owner in ParkSquare is supportive.” As one of the city’s most “Instagrammable” locales, Maison La Fleur has swiftly become a local landmark for young professionals, intergenerational families, artists, and tourists. Passersby and visitors are usually drawn to the store’s signature floral archway and sensory shopping experience, punctuated by the shop’s plush, decorative furnishings. “The design took a little bit of time but was originally inspired by London’s famous restaurant, The Florist. We fell in love with their cherry blossoms and tried to incorporate that into our design. I also wanted to come up with something modern, yet cozy and inviting,” said Rousso. To engage the community and expand the international scope of their brand, Maison La Fleur will soon expand into an intimate champagne bar offering 12 specialty bellinis, Tea Forte, coffee and gourmet desserts. Jafarov anticipates the bar opening and encourages residents to visit. “Aventura offers a tight community of intelligent, diverse and friendly people eager to assist. Just like others have supported us, we would love to give back and support new business owners as well.” For more information about the luxury flower boutique, call (888) 202-0011 or visit their website at www.maisonlafleur.com Visit Maison La Fleur on YouTube Follow Maison La Fleur on Instagram < Previous News Next News >

  • Vacation Hangover: The Financial Stress Travelers Feel After The Trip | sun-times

Vacation Hangover: The Financial Stress Travelers Feel After The Trip Aventura Digest Jul 24, 2026 Weekend Getaways And Cross-Country Trips Are Supposed To Offer A Break From Daily Routines And Financial Stress. Yet For Many Travelers, The Return Home Comes With An Uncomfortable Reality: The Trip Cost Far More Than Expected. From Luxurious Dinners And Spontaneous Excursions To Airport Snacks And Daily Coffees, Vacation Spending Is Becoming Increasingly Difficult To Control In An Era Of Rising Prices And Experience-Driven Travel. According to a survey conducted by TopCashback, a cash back site serving more than 20 million members worldwide to help people save as much money as possible on everyday spending, overspending while traveling is now the norm rather than the exception. Nearly 94% of respondents said they have spent more on vacation than originally planned, with more than 65% reporting they typically overspend by at least $250. "Vacations should create memories, not money stress," said Elisabella Ricca, Personal Finance and Consumer Analyst at TopCashback. "Giving yourself a spending plan before you travel can make it easier to enjoy the experience in the moment and avoid feeling guilty about the cost afterward." These findings reflect a growing disconnect between travel budgets and actual spending as vacationers navigate higher costs and pressure to make their trips feel worthwhile. Inflation's Impact On Travel Behaviors Airfare, hotel rates, dining and entertainment costs are all climbing, forcing many households to rethink how often they take trips and what those trips look like. In fact, nearly 78% of respondents said rising travel costs have changed the way they vacation. Meanwhile, nearly 83% said they're traveling less often altogether due to rising costs. Travelers are Turning to Financing These changing behaviors may also explain why financing vacations is becoming more common. The survey found 67% of respondents have used credit cards, financing plans or "buy now, pay later" services to pay for a vacation. While these tools can help make trips more accessible in the short term, they may also extend the financial impact of a vacation long after travelers return home. Financial Stress After the Fun For some travelers, that long-term effect is already being felt. More than 58% of survey respondents said they feel guilty at least sometimes about how much they spend on vacation, a feeling that often emerges after returning home and assessing purchases that seemed easier to justify while away from normal routines. Small Purchases are Adding Up to Big Overspending Vacation overspending rarely happens through one large purchase alone. Instead, smaller expenses accumulate steadily throughout the trip. For example, 53% of respondents said they're most likely to spend more on coffee or drinks while traveling than they would at home, and another 53% said snacks are the common overspending culprit. These purchases may seem insignificant individually, but multiple small transactions each day can quickly add up. Experiences Outweigh Luxury When Justifying Expenses Even as travelers look for ways to cut costs, most remain willing to spend on experiences they view as meaningful. The survey found the top vacation splurges respondents are most likely to justify are fancy dinners (56%) and excursions or tours (48%). This suggests travelers are placing greater value on memorable moments rather than luxury, such as high-end accommodations. Careful planning isn't enough for most travelers to stay within a budget, as 59% of respondents said they set a vacation budget beforehand, signaling that overspending is often less about a lack of preparation and more about the realities of modern travel costs. Nearly 90% of survey respondents said earning cash back or rewards on travel purchases would influence their spending decisions at least slightly. As people look for a better way to manage expenses and offset costs, many are turning to programs such as TopCashback, which offers travel-related cash back on airfare and last-minute flights, vacation packages, hotels and lodging, transportation and parking, car rentals, travel insurance, cruises, resorts and more. Over the past five decades, VLP evolved from its group-home origins into Victory Living Programs, Inc., expanding toward a more inclusive, community-integrated model of care. For more than 25 years, former Executive Director Bobbi Wigand guided the organization, helping build the foundation. VLP’s programs include a Supported Living program providing individualized coaching in budgeting, meal planning, household management, transportation, and social skills, assisting individuals with intellectual, developmental, and learning disabilities in living in their own homes. Its employment services include Supported Employment Phase I, covering job search support, interview preparation, and on-the-job training, as well as Supported Employment Phase II, which delivers long-term follow-along support beyond the 150th day of employment.
