- HHS’ Civil Rights Office Finds - Harvard University In Violation Of Federal Civil Rights Law | sun-times
HHS’ Civil Rights Office Finds - Harvard University In Violation Of Federal Civil Rights Law Jewish Connection News Jul 9, 2025 This Month, The U.S. Department Of Health And Human Services (HHS) Office For Civil Rights (OCR) Announced That Harvard University (Harvard) Violated Title VI Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 (Title VI) By Acting With Deliberate Indifference Towards Harassment Of Jewish And Israeli Students By Other Students And Faculty From October 7th, 2023, Through The Present. OCR Enforces Title VI, Which Prohibits A Recipient Of Federal Financial Assistance From Discriminating In Its Programs And Activities On The Basis Of Race, Color, Or National Origin, Which Includes Discrimination Against Individuals That Is Based On Their Actual Or Perceived Israeli Or Jewish Identity Or Ancestry. From Fiscal Years 2023 To 2025, Harvard And Its Subrecipients Have Received Over $794 Million In Federal Financial Assistance From HHS. OCR’s Notice of Violation finds that Harvard has been – and is – deliberately indifferent to the severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive harassment of Jewish and Israeli students by its own students and faculty. The findings are based on information and documents obtained during the investigation: Harvard’s policies and procedures; conclusions from Harvard’s own internal Task Force on Combating Antisemitism and Anti-Israeli Bias; findings from a U.S. Congressional task force that investigated antisemitism on college campuses; and reliable media reports that contemporaneously depicted antisemitic episodes of vandalism, harassment, and physical violence over a 19-month period at Harvard. “Harvard’s public pledges to improve its disciplinary framework for harassment and misconduct are inadequate to meaningfully address these serious findings,” said Paula M. Stannard, Director of the Office for Civil Rights at HHS. “HHS stands ready to re-engage in productive discussions with Harvard to reach resolution on the corrective action that Harvard can take to remedy the violations and come into compliance with its Title VI obligations.” OCR’s findings document that a hostile environment existed, and continues to exist, at Harvard. This hostile environment includes harassing speech, threats, and intimidation targeting Jewish and Israeli students, including calls for genocide and murder. OCR’s findings also extensively detail acts of physical intimidation and violence between students. This hostile environment denied, and continues to deny, students’ fundamental educational opportunities. Such educational opportunities denied include safe class attendance, access to campus facilities such as libraries, dining halls, dorms, and other common areas, participation in extracurricular activities, and overall physical and emotional well-being on campus. The Notice of Violation explains the ways in which Harvard – which has substantial control over both the students who committed harassment and the property where harassment occurred – acted with deliberate indifference with regard to the hostile environment. For example, Harvard failed: To establish clear and consistent policies and practices to report and remediate discrimination; To discipline violators of its policies with any uniformity, resulting in a patchwork application of sanctions that Harvard inconsistently reduced or reversed, resulting in a disciplinary system that had little to no deterrent effect; and To enforce its own time, place and manner restrictions in any consistent or meaningful way, resulting in recurring and unsanctioned episodes that deprived Jewish and Israeli students their full access to parts of campus where they studied and socialized. The Notice of Violation may be found at: https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/harvard-title-vi-notice-violation.pdf . This investigation is the second OCR investigation completed in this Administration under Title VI that examines the civil rights liability of a Federal funding recipient for race and national origin discrimination under a deliberate indifference theory. The scope of the findings released today do not address OCR’s ongoing investigation under Title VI into suspected race-based discrimination permeating the operations of the Harvard Law Review journal. Today’s announcement is part of a broader effort by the Administration’s multi-agency Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, which is part of the Administration’s commitment to address “unlawful anti-Semitic harassment and violence,” as expressed in President Trump’s Executive Orders, Combating Anti-Semitism on December 11th, 2019 and Additional Measures to Combat Anti-Semitism on January 29th, 2025. If you believe that you or someone else has been discriminated against because of race, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, or religion in programs or activities that HHS directly operates or for which HHS provides Federal financial assistance, you may file a complaint with the HHS Office for Civil Rights at: https://www.hhs.gov/civil-rights/filing-a-complaint/index.html . Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency: Welcomes New Restaurants and Additions to SOBEWFF® Hallandale Beach Event Series January 26, 2024 Share The City of Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (HBCRA) has announced it will expand the much-anticipated Food & Groove event, part of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF®) Hallandale Beach event series, to include local favorites from both the City of Hallandale Beach and the surrounding area. Any restaurant owner considering expanding, moving, or opening a restaurant in Hallandale Beach is invited to showcase their cuisine at Food & Groove, a wine, food, and art experience, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Pegasus Park at Gulfstream Village (901 South Federal Highway). “As a way of continuing to bolster the local restaurant industry and encourage even more restaurants to open up a location within the City of Hallandale Beach, for the first time ever, the HBCRA is opening up the Food and Groove festival to a few restaurants located outside of the City,” said Dr. Jeremy Earle, City Manager/CRA Executive Director of the City of Hallandale Beach. Hallandale beach is uniquely positioned to welcome cultural influences from both Broward and Miami-Dade counties to add to the City’s vibrant and eclectic culinary and arts scene. “In fact, we’re hoping to bring at least ten new restaurants to our Hallandale Beach community in 2024, to further enhance our international offerings.” As an incentive, all participating restaurants outside of the City boundaries will be eligible for a $1,000 reimbursement. Following the event, restaurant owners may be eligible to receive grants for commercial kitchen equipment, façade improvements, and interior renovations to offset the cost of opening a restaurant in the City. In 2023, more than 25 local restaurants participated in the Food & Groove. Participating restaurants this year include Ajaicos Restaurant, Dr. Limon Hallandale, KAO Bar & Grill, Krazy Vegan, Chef Irie, Dunns River Island Café and more. The HBCRA has also announced some exciting new additions to the entertainment at this year’s “Festival of Lights” themed evening for eventgoers to enjoy. As part of the interactive entertainment, 300 drones will perform 12-minute show 1,000 feet in the sky. There will also be a glow-in-the-dark LED activation area for attendees, art, music, and a performance from FUSION®, a true DJ-driven dance band that will have guests movin' and groovin' to the beats. Bundle tickets are available for $225 per person for attendees who plan to attend both the Celebrity Chef Dinner on Friday, February 23 at KAO Bar & Grill (11 NE 1st Avenue) and Food & Groove on Saturday, February 24. - The Importance of Mental Wellness for a Healthy Heart and Brain
The Importance of Mental Wellness for a Healthy Heart and Brain June 9, 2023 Share Research shows Anxiety, Stress and Depression can have a negative impact on Physical Health and may even increase the risk for Heart Disease and Stroke. In fact, the American Heart Association, the world's leading NonProfit Organization focused on Heart and Brain Health, identified a strong interconnection between the mind, heart and body in its scientific statement, "Psychological Health, Well-Being and the Mind-Heart-Body Connection." "Research has clearly demonstrated negative Psychological factors, personality traits and Mental Health Disorders can negatively impact Cardiovascular Health," said Volunteer Chair of the Statement Writing Committee Glenn N. Levine, M.D., FAHA, Master Clinician and Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of the Cardiology Section at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. "The body's biological reaction to Stress, Anxiety and other types of poor Mental Health can manifest physically through an Irregular Heart Rate or Rhythm, increased Blood Pressure and inflammation throughout the body. Negative Psychological health is also associated with Health Behaviors that are linked to an increased risk for Heart Disease and Stroke, such as smoking, lower levels of physical activity, unhealthy diet, being overweight and not taking medications as prescribed." Studies have found some people, including people of color, may face a greater risk of poor health outcomes due to Chronic Stress, Depression and Anxiety linked to Psychosocial Stressors, particularly those related to Social and Economic Inequality, Discrimination, Systemic Racism and other Societal Factors. A study published in the "Journal of the American Heart Association" found U.S. adults who reported feeling highly discriminated against at work had an increased risk of developing High Blood Pressure compared to those who reported low discrimination at work. "Mental Health includes our Emotional, Psychological and Social Well-Being," Levine said. "It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle Stress, relate to others and make choices. Practicing mindfulness in all forms allows one to be more aware of and have more control over emotional responses to the experiences of daily life." Consider these tips from Levine to improve your mind-heart-body connection: • Practice meditation regularly. Even simple actions such as communing with nature or sitting quietly and focusing on your breath can have a positive impact. • Get plenty of good, restful sleep. Set a regular bedtime, turn off or dim electronics as bedtime approaches and form a wakeup routine. • Make connections and stay in touch. Reach out and connect regularly with family and friends, or engage in activities to meet new people. • Practice mindful movement. There are many types of gentle mindful practices like Yoga and Tai Chi that can be done about anywhere with no special equipment to help ease your soul and muscles. • Spend time with your furry friend. Companion animals are often beloved members of the family and research shows pets may help reduce physiological reactions to stress as well as support improved physical activity. • Work it out. Regular physical activity - a recommended 150 minutes of moderate activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or a mix of both weekly - can help relieve Tension, Anxiety and Depression, and give you an immediate exercise "high." "Wellness is more than simply the absence of disease," Levine said. "It is an active process directed toward a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life. When we strive to reduce negative aspects of Psychological Health, we are promoting an overall positive and healthy state of being." - Beyond The Sticker Price: Identifying The Most Affordable New Vehicles To Insure | sun-times
Beyond The Sticker Price: Identifying The Most Affordable New Vehicles To Insure By Feature Impact Sep 17, 2026 For Most Households, Buying A New Vehicle Is One Of The Largest Financial Decisions They'll Make. The Purchase Price Is Only The Beginning, However. Fuel, Maintenance, Depreciation And Insurance All Contribute To The Total Cost Of Ownership, Making Affordability A Consideration That Extends Well Beyond The Showroom. To help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions, Mercury Insurance recently released its annual rankings of the most affordable new 2026 model year vehicles to insure, identifying the top-performing SUV, truck, sedan and electric or hybrid vehicles in four of today's most popular categories. "Consumers naturally compare purchase price, fuel economy, safety ratings and technology features before buying a vehicle," said Chong Gao, Director of Research and Development for Mercury Insurance. "Insurance is one of the few ownership costs drivers can estimate before making a purchase. Factoring it into the decision gives consumers a more complete picture of what that vehicle is likely to cost over the years they own it." While every driver's premium is unique, this year's rankings also revealed a broader trend: Practical, mainstream vehicles continue to offer some of the strongest long-term insurance value. "Vehicles designed for everyday drivers often strike the best balance between safety, repairability and replacement costs," Gao said. "That's reflected in this year's rankings, where familiar models from manufacturers like Hyundai, Chevrolet, Honda, Kia and Volkswagen rose to the top. It reinforces the idea that choosing a practical vehicle can pay dividends well beyond the purchase price." A Cost You Can Plan For Unlike unexpected repairs or fluctuating fuel prices, insurance is a predictable ownership expense consumers can research before purchasing a vehicle. Comparing insurance costs alongside purchase price, fuel economy, maintenance expenses and expected repair costs can help shoppers better understand the long-term financial commitment of vehicle ownership. Factors Influencing Insurance Costs Insurance costs are influenced by many factors, but repair complexity, parts availability, vehicle safety systems and historical claims experience all contribute to how a vehicle is insured. While advanced safety technology can help reduce accidents, vehicles that are easier and less expensive to repair can also help improve long-term affordability. Among the considerations insurers evaluate are: • Repair and replacement costs • Historical claims experience • Vehicle safety features and crash performance • Theft frequency • Availability and cost of replacement parts • Vehicle performance characteristics The Most Affordable Vehicles to Insure This year's rankings show practical, mainstream vehicles continue to offer some of the strongest insurance value. The top spot in both the SUV and electric and hybrid categories was claimed by Hyundai while Chevrolet led the truck category and Volkswagen topped the sedan rankings. Rounding out Mercury's rankings were several familiar nameplates recognized for balancing insurance affordability with everyday value. SUVs: 1. Hyundai Santa Fe 2. Chevrolet Blazer 3. Honda Pilot 4. Kia Sportage 5. Honda Passport Trucks: 1. Chevrolet Colorado LT 2. Chevrolet Silverado C3500 3. Ford Maverick and Ranger 4. Hyundai Santa Cruz SE 5. Toyota Tundra CrewMax Sedans and Coupes: 1. Volkswagen Golf R 2. Acura Integra 3. Honda Prelude 4. Kia K4 5. Mazda3 Electric and Hybrids: 1. Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid 2. Chevrolet Blazer EV 3. Kia Sportage Hybrid 4. Ford Escape Hybrid 5. Honda CR-V Hybrid "The smartest vehicle purchase isn't always the one with the lowest sticker price," Gao said. "It's the one that delivers the best overall value over time. Comparing insurance before buying gives consumers another tool to make a more informed decision."
