7 Ways To Create A Sensory-Friendly Holiday Celebration For Kids With Autism South Florida Sun Times Dec 25, 2025 Whether It’s A Festive Family Dinner Or A Party, A Holiday Celebration Is Often Meant To Be A Joyful Time Of Connection. However, For Many Autistic Children And Their Families, A Holiday Get-Together Can Present Unique Challenges. Sensory Sensitivities, Changes To Familiar Routines, And Increased Social Expectations May Make Festive Environments Feel Overwhelming Or Distressing. Recognizing And Respecting These Differences Is Key To Creating A More Inclusive And Supportive Holiday Experience For Everyone Involved. As the CEO of Above and Beyond Therapy, where we provide personalized ABA therapy in Georgia, I’ve seen firsthand how thoughtfulness, flexibility, and inclusion can positively shape holiday gatherings for children with Autism and their families. With intentional planning and compassion, traditions and environments can be adapted so every child feels safe, supported, and empowered to engage in ways that respect their individual needs and preferences. Here are seven ways to create a sensory-friendly holiday celebration that supports autistic children. Respect and Maintain Predictable Routines Children with Autism often thrive on structure and predictability. A holiday event can disrupt daily routines, such as mealtimes, sleep schedules, or familiar activities, which may increase anxiety or emotional dysregulation. To help ease this transition, try to keep as much of the child’s regular routine intact as possible on the day of the event. Using visual schedules, countdowns, or social stories can help prepare the child for what to expect. Letting them know when it will start and end and what activities might happen can also reduce uncertainty. Even small efforts, such as keeping bedtime consistent or eating familiar foods beforehand, can help a child feel more grounded. Create a Quiet Space for Regulation Holiday celebrations often involve noise, crowds, and constant activity. For children with sensory sensitivities, having access to a quiet, calming space is essential. Designate a room or area where the child can take breaks as needed. This space might include soft lighting, noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, favorite toys, or books. If you’re attending an event outside your home, consider bringing a small sensory kit and asking the host in advance if a quiet space is available. Allowing a child to step away without judgment helps prevent sensory overload and supports emotional regulation. Be Mindful of Sensory Overload From bright decorations and loud music to strong scents and lots of movement, a holiday celebration can be filled with intense sensory input. Thoughtfully adjusting the environment can make a significant difference. Opt for soft or adjustable lighting instead of flashing lights, keep music at a lower volume, and avoid strong fragrances when possible. Introducing sensory elements gradually and respecting a child’s need to opt out is important. Offering alternatives, such as quiet crafts, familiar games, or one-on-one activities, will also allow children to engage without feeling overwhelmed. Give Choices and Respect Autonomy Holiday traditions can be meaningful, but they should never override a child’s comfort or sense of control. Giving children choices helps them feel empowered and respected. You might ask, “Would you like to help decorate or take a break nearby?” or “Do you want to stay for the whole get-together or just part of it?”If a child chooses not to participate in certain activities, honor that decision without pressure. Connection and emotional safety matter more than following traditions exactly as planned. Prepare for Social Interactions A holiday celebration often includes extended family, friends, or unfamiliar guests, which can create added social pressure. Expectations around greetings, conversation, or physical affection may feel uncomfortable for children with autism. Preparing ahead of time with social stories or role-playing common scenarios can help set clear expectations. Reassure the child that it’s okay to wave instead of hug, take breaks from conversations, or communicate in their own way. It’s also helpful to inform guests in advance so they understand and respect the child’s boundaries. Authentic connection should always take priority over social norms. Plan Food Options With Sensory Needs in Mind Holiday events often center around food, which can be challenging for children with sensory sensitivities or selective eating preferences. Including familiar, preferred foods alongside traditional dishes can help the child feel safe and included. There’s no need to pressure them to try new foods during the celebration. If the event is at someone else’s home, bringing along favorite snacks or a familiar meal can ease stress and make the experience more enjoyable for everyone. Communicate With Family and Friends Open communication is essential for creating a supportive holiday event. Talk with family members or hosts ahead of time about your child’s needs, preferences, and boundaries. Share what helps them feel comfortable and what may be overwhelming. This isn’t about apologizing; it’s about advocating. Let others know the child may need breaks, may not participate in every activity, or may express joy differently. Encouraging empathy, flexibility, and understanding helps create a truly inclusive environment. Put Connection and Inclusion at the Heart of the Celebration! A holiday get-together can be meaningful and joyful for autistic children when their needs are respected and supported. Thoughtful planning, flexibility, and clear communication go a long way in creating a positive experience. At its core, a holiday celebration is about connection, not perfection. By prioritizing inclusion and sensory-friendly choices, we help ensure every child feels seen, valued, and welcome. - Water Damage, Mold and Mildew Experts: 1st Priority Restoration Are There To Help Solve Your Problem
Water Damage, Mold and Mildew Experts: 1st Priority Restoration Are There To Help Solve Your Problem September 2, 2021 Share Mold & viruses can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. One tiny water leak can create huge problems. If your home has been damaged by water from a leaking pipe, intruding water from all the current rains or mold damage from moisture over time. How are you going to address these problems in your home? A Restoration Company such as 1st Priority Restoration is usually the first company to call following significant damage to a home from floods, water damage, sewage backup and other major water events. The job of a restoration company is to clean up the mess and to preserve the home, protect the home and its contents so that further damage will not occur. Flood damage can be found in any geographical area, regardless of elevation. The causes of flooding can range from natural disasters, burst pipes, leaking pipes, rain storms or sewer lines that are backing up. Even in a condo, you could have a water leak in your wall, under a toilet or behind a kitchen cabinet creating mold that can cause damage to your property and your health. 1st Priority Restoration can find the source of the leak, fix it, restore your property and work directly with your insurance. Regardless of the cause, restoration professionals are called upon to repair water damage, mold damage and restore flooded properties. The water damage restoration process is highly regulated in order to ensure that properties damaged by flood or sewer events, can be effectively restored to a safe space for a homeowner to remain safe during the cleanup. You need a company such as 1st Priority Restoration who you can trust to do the job correctly. The process is simple, when 1st Priority Restoration arrives, they will thoroughly walk through your home and discuss the areas that need to be cleaned & restored to their original condition. Your insurance company adjuster or claim representative may recommend what and how your home should be cleaned, but in the end, it is your decision to make. In the past year, we have all heard the word “Mitigation” more times than we can count, but with water damage, that is exactly what needs to be done. Water damage restoration does not stop at restoring your real estate back to proper functioning. The professionals at 1st Priority will inspect the underlying causes that have caused the water damage in the first place and make sure there won’t be a reoccurrence. They will repair all of the damaged structures and replace the materials to make your property safe, for years to come. If your property has been exposed to water damage, you may have to do water mitigation. Strict actions are required in water mitigation, such as: removal of damaged materials such as drywall and flooring. Molds and mildew that have accumulated in areas in your property will be disinfected and deodorized to restore a healthy environment. Further cleaning and deodorizing should be done to make sure that your real estate is back in tip-top shape. Water damage mitigation should happen immediately after flooding or water buildup. Take action immediately, because letting your property sit in water can cause further damages and expenses. Materials soaking in water collect microbes and spread water-borne diseases. Furniture, wood flooring and walls will crack, sag and collect fungi after prolonged exposure to moisture. If your property is particularly old, it may be time to replace materials such as pipes to prevent a reoccurrence of water damage. If pipes are behind walls, it may require more extensive repairs. The water mitigation process will depend on how long your property has been exposed to water. Air humidifiers and drying equipment must be turned on around the clock in areas with severe water damage. Mold spores are especially dangerous to health and thorough cleaning and disinfecting should be done as part of the water damage mitigation. It is advisable to get the temperature, humidity and moisture of your property tested to see if it has been restored to normal standards, 1st Priority professionals can handle the entire process. After 1st Priority Restor-ation evaluates the work and equipment needed to clean your home, they will provide you QUICKLY with an estimate or contract/services. NEVER FOOL AROUND WITH MOLD & MILDEW: When it comes to mold and mildew, we cannot take those potential hazards lightly. A mold problem can cause you to experience dizziness, anxiety, depression and even hallucinations. If you have been experiencing a diminished attention span or problems with your memory, it might be a good idea to have your home inspected for black mold by a mold remediation crew. For people sensitive to mold, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reactions, including shortness of breath. At 1st Priority Restora-tion, this is what they do 365 days a year, nobody knows how to prevent potential dangers like they do. By dialing: 1 (800) 617-1112 – you can save financially and your health as well! LEAK DETECTION: One tiny water leak can create huge problems in a home or business. An undetected water pipe leak will not only dramatically increase your utility bills, but it can also lead to even more expensive water damage and mold. If you’ve had higher than average water bills, constantly have to refill your pool or hear running water, it’s time to call the leak detection specialists at 1st Priority Restoration! Is water pipe leak detection possible if the pipes are behind a wall? Yes, using the newest state-of-the-art detection tools, highly trained technicians are able to locate water pipe leaks that are hidden behind walls. They can even provide water plumbing leak detection within concrete slab foundations. Will insurance cover the cost of plumbing leak detection services? That all depends on your home's insurance plan. In many situations, when there is a need for water damage restoration, many insurance companies will cover the related costs. 1st Priority Restoration representatives can work directly with your home insurance company to verify the need for the plumbing leak detection service, cause of the problem and the repairs that will be required to remedy the situation. MOLD AND YOUR HOME: Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the outside air can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, bags and pets, which can be carried indoors. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, pipes or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric and upholstery. With all of the rain and storms we have been having these past months, you can see a pattern of mold growth that will last. From leaks, flooding and driving rain, mold growth is a certainty in South Florida. If you are concerned that you might have a mold or mildew problem, it is best to call the professionals for a complete evaluation of your home. Your health is your most important asset, so just like you go see a doctor for a test, your home needs testing as well. VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION: There are some important ways that we can prevent the spread of mold and what you can do to get rid of it. Keep an eye out for hidden leaks: Wet spots on your ceiling, the baseboards or on the floor are a telltale sign of a leaky pipe or roof. Your home's pipes are behind drywall, which can leave a small leak unnoticed. Mold can grow behind those walls and filter into the air through ducts or pipes. At 1st Priority, they can come in and assess the situation before it gets worse. Did you know that many air conditioner systems/ducts are susceptible to mold growth? They often trap moisture, creating a breeding ground for spores. Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms create a lot of excess heat and humidity, especially here in south Florida – whether it is from a shower, stove or even a dryer, all of these areas should be well ventilated. Education is key to anything – when our health is at stake – knowing that mold spores can lay dormant for years after they are produced and could begin growing again at any time, it is extremely important to know. Because of this, regular cleanings and having 1st Priority Restoration to depend on, will certainly make our lives much easier. Ever wonder why you or your children wake up coughing and sneezing on a regular basis? The CDC may have the answer. According to the CDC, in 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found that there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, sneezing and wheezing in otherwise healthy people and in individuals susceptible with compromised immune conditions. Mold or mold spores may cause asthma attacks in people who have asthma and are allergic to mold. Even in some nonallergic individuals, mold can cause sym-ptoms of irritation in the eyes, skin and airways. For example, the "black mold" Stachybotrys, along with some other types of mold, produce toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals. Some-times, people may develop se-vere reactions to mold exposure, but cleaning and sanitizing by professionals you can trust, can help mitigate MOST OF the health issues. EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING: With decades in the business, 1st Priority Restoration is a reputable company with over 20 employees that are licensed and insured. They have been doing all types of cleaning, sanitizing, leak/mold detection and water damage restoration for more than a decade. "We use the most efficient cleaning and water removal equipment to make sure that our customers are satisfied with the job we do for them. We try to use nontoxic (Green) safe chemicals for all mildew treatments. - Life After Stroke: Tips For Recovery And Daily Living
Life After Stroke: Tips For Recovery And Daily Living January 5, 2023 Share In the weeks and months immediately following a Stroke, an early rehabilitation program offers the best possible recovery outcomes. While each person's Stroke Recovery journey is unique, starting the path toward rehabilitation as soon as it's medically safe allows Stroke Survivors to mitigate the lasting effects. According to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, each year, approximately 800,000 people in the United States have a Stroke. Strokes can happen to anyone, at any age. In fact, globally about 1 in 4 adults over the age of 25 will have a Stroke in their lifetime. Early Intervention The rehabilitation and support a survivor receives can greatly influence health outcomes and recovery. The first three months after a Stroke are especially critical. Although recovery may continue for years after a Stroke, this time in the immediate aftermath of a Stroke is when the brain is most able to adjust to the damage done by the Stroke so the survivor can learn new ways to do things. Physical, Communication and Cognitive Changes Following a Stroke, a survivor may experience physical changes, such as: Fatigue, Seizures, Weakness or Paralysis on one side of the body or Spasticity, Stiff or Rigid Muscles which may cause difficulty with completing daily activities and tasks. If experiencing Fatigue, speak with your Health Care Provider about ways to reduce it. Your care team may also be able to provide medications to help with Seizures and Spasticity. Physical Therapy is also an option. Challenges after a Stroke depend on the severity and location of the Stroke. In addition to various Physical Disabilities, Stroke Survivors may experience Aphasia, communication and thought problems related to speaking, listening, understanding or memory. Planning, organizing ideas or making decisions can also be harder. "Remember to be patient when communicating with a Stroke Survivor," said Elissa Charbonneau, M.S., D.O., Chief Medical Officer of Encompass Health and an American Stroke Association National Volunteer. "The impact of a Stroke on cognitive, speech and language can be significant and isolating. When connecting with a Stroke Survivor, some helpful practices include: demonstrating tasks, breaking actions into smaller steps, enunciating, asking multiple choice questions and repetition." Customized Rehabilitation Once a Stroke Survivor's medical condition is stabilized and he or she is ready to leave the hospital, rehabilitation can help restore function and teach new ways to complete everyday tasks. Rehabilitation may take place in an Inpatient Facility, Skilled Nursing Facility or Long-Term Acute Care Facility. Outpatient Clinics and Home Health Agencies can also provide Rehabilitative Care in certain circumstances. One patient's rehab journey might include therapy to improve balance, strength or mobility while another might need speech or other therapies. A rehabilitation designed for the individual is critical. Preventing A Recurrence After a first Stroke, nearly 1 in 4 survivors will have another. Stroke Survivors can help reduce their risk of having another Stroke by working with their health care team to identify what caused the Stroke and uncover personal risk factors. Taking steps such as: healthy eating, reducing sedentary time and taking medications as prescribed can help your brain and reduce your risk of a repeat Stroke. Controlling conditions such as: High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Sleep Apnea also reduce your risk of having another Stroke. Support During Your Journey Caregivers and other loved ones can provide important long-term support during your recovery and rehabilitation. Find resources for Stroke Rehab and Recovery including the "Life After Stroke" guide, "Simply Good" cookbook and a support network to connect with other survivors at: www.Stroke.org/Recovery < Previous News Next News >

- The 100 Deadliest Days Have Begun
The 100 Deadliest Days Have Begun June 8, 2021 Share An Average of Seven People are Killed Per Day By A Teen Driver Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer and unfortunately, a dangerous time of year for young drivers. Nationwide, more than 30 percent of deaths involving teen drivers occurs during what’s called the: “100 Deadliest Days” - a period that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. “Now that the CDC has lifted many COVID-19 Pandemic Restrictions, young adults are eager to reconnect with friends, which means young inexperienced drivers will spend more time on the roads,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “This increases the chances that they’re involved in a crash and for every mile driven, new teen drivers (ages 16-17 years old) are three times more likely, to be involved in a deadly crash, compared to adults.” 100 Deadliest Days statistics from 2010 - 2019 Nationwide • Each year, an average of 2,081 teen drivers are involved in fatal crashes; 636 of those (30%) occurred, during the 100 deadliest days. • More than 7,038 people died, in teen-related summertime crashes, from 2010 to 2019. • That’s more than seven people a day, each summer compared to the rest of the year (six people/day). Florida • An average of 36 teen drivers are involved in fatal crashes during this time. • On average, 158 people are killed in teen driver-related crashes every year; 40 of those occur during the 100 deadliest days. • 400 people were killed in teen driver-related crashes, during the past 10 summers. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens ages 16-19. In fact, six teens are killed each day in crashes that are entirely preventable. Per miles driven, teen drivers are nearly three times more likely, than drivers aged 20 and older, to be killed in a crash. Even the best and brightest teens, have an increased risk, of being involved, in a deadly crash. “Teens lack the experience, skills and maturity of a seasoned driver, which contribute to an increase in the chance that, there will be a deadly outcome, not just for the teen driver, but also for any passenger, as well as others on the road,” Jenkins continued. “So, we all have a vested interest, in ensuring that teens are safe behind the wheel.” Understanding the risks and knowing the facts, will prepare, both, you and your teen(s) for the road ahead. Here are some of the highest risk factors for teens. Driving with passengers. Teen drivers’ crash risks multiply, when they have teen passengers, so, set limits and enforce them. Driving at night. Night driving is more dangerous due to limited visibility, fatigue and impaired drivers, on the road. This is especially, a risky time for teens. Limit the time that your novice driver spends, behind the wheel, at night. Not wearing a safety belt. Wearing a safety belt, greatly reduces the risk of being hurt or killed in a crash. Make a rule: Everyone buckles up, for every trip. Speeding. Speeding, is a leading factor in crashes for teens and adults. Teens need to follow posted speed limits and parents, should set a good example and have strong rules. Distracted driving.
