- The COVID-19 Craziness
The COVID-19 Craziness By Marilyn M. Singleton, MD, JD June 3, 2021 Share Proves That Einstein Was Right One of Albert Einstein’s many aphorisms, “three great forces rule the world: stupidity, fear and greed,” is particularly apt in the COVID-19 Era. Our government’s duty is to warn the public of a possible Pandemic and recommend precautions. However, the initial COVID-19 tactic, was to strike fear into our hearts and minds. The constant display of COVID-19 “cases” on the nightly news, suggested certain death awaited those who ventured out of their homes. During the Diamond Princess Cruiseship’s outbreak in early February of 2020, we had a real world demonstration of the behavior of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus. Trapped in a floating Petri dish, the crew performed their duties and passengers were quarantined in their rooms with a ventilation system without special high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, only 17 percent of the 3,711 occupants became infected with SARS-CoV-2, only half of whom had symptoms. Because 80 percent of those infected, were in cabins that didn’t have a previous confirmed case, the likely mode of infection was transmission of aerosols (in contrast to large droplets that quickly fall to the ground) through the ventilation system and locking the people in, had proved to be counterproductive. We also learned from the Diamond Princess episode, that the median age of symptomatic folks were people 68 years old, 50 percent of whom had underlying medical conditions and the deaths were in those over 70 years of age. Despite this real world clinical experience, the CDC and Dr. Fauci advised state governments to quarantine every living human being in the country. The lessons of the Diamond Princess faded from the news while a never-ending campaign of fear, persisted. Only the well-informed, realized the news was presented through agenda-colored glasses. It’s not smart to keep people indoors, when by May 2020, we knew 66 percent of New York’s new cases were in folks who stayed home. The scientific consensus was leaning toward emerging evidence, that the SARS-CoV-2 Virus was spread by tiny aerosols, which could be reduced by good ventilation. After more than a year, the CDC finally acknowledged real world evidence “the science” and announced that “less than 10 percent” of transmission had occurred outdoors. Data shows the actual outdoor transmission is somewhere between 0.1 and 1 percent. While technically true, one wonders whether the CDC used purposefully misleading wording to cover its tracks after mask recommendations for children outdoors at summer camps and mandates for seafaring commercial fishermen. Fear fuels stupidity, by June 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) had announced that asymptomatic transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus is “very rare,” study after, study have shown that cloth masks, do not prevent transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus or other, similar viruses. When political pundits see unmasked people as a threat and a fully vaccinated physician, the COVID-19 experts, found it “psychologically hard” to dine unmasked with a vaccinated friend, masking has not become part of “following the science,” but, it became an obsession. Greed knows no bounds, hospitals are charging up to $1419 for a $50 test. Designer drugs are the new cash cow. Regeneron’s stock price was up more than 60 percent, in 2020. Who would have thought COVID-19 would be justification for a manufacturer to release TV ads for drugs that are not fully FDA approved? Regeneron’s ads instill fear, then present their drug as the solution. COVID-19 Diagnosis? Oh my! Isolate and call the doctor to get monoclonal antibodies (at $1,250 per dose). Wall Street predicts that in 2021, Pfizer and Moderna will generate $32 billion in COVID-19 Vaccine Revenue. Thanks to the Vaccines, Moderna’s stock, has soared 700 percent in 2020. Pfizer plans for Vaccines to be a long-term business plan, by roping children into the Vaccine corral. Was the drug and health product manufacturers’ $92 million to lobbyists in the last 3 months intended to ensure the federal government’s cooperation? Patients and physicians have a choice. Despite the Vaccine, über alles narrative, only 60 percent of Dr. Fauci’s staff have taken “the shot.” The NIH’s COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines are not mandates. Patients can opt for early treatment at a cost of $10 to $125 per entire course with effective repurposed generic drugs, supported by real-time worldwide evidence. Sadly, as Kaiser Health News noted, despite being a “godsend” to reduce death and hospitalizations, “drug companies have no incentive to spend millions to test new uses for cheap, off-patent drugs.” The people are not stupid, they are merely, ill-informed. Media outlets were increasing ratings at the expense of the truth, the drug companies were rolling in dough, researchers were letting politics guide their outcomes and social media, was censoring experts who disagreed with the wizards at WHO, NIH, CDC and medical journals, who have been funded by big Pharma. Could we have avoided lockdowns with repurposed drugs, improved air circulation and HEPA filters? Could we have saved millions of lives lost, not only to COVID-19 but from suicide, overdoses, violence and Cancer? About Dr. Singleton Dr. Singleton is a board-certified anesthesiologist. She is the past President of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). She graduated from Stanford and earned her MD at UCSF Medical School. - The City of Hollywood Celebrates National Community Development Week
The City of Hollywood Celebrates National Community Development Week April 14, 2022 Share This week has been designated as National Community Development week by the National Community Development Association to celebrate the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the HOME Investment Partnerships program (HOME), and the State Housing Initiatives Partnership program (SHIP). The programs provide annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities, and counties to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons. The COVID-19 Pandemic caused unpredictable hardships to Hollywood residents. Using funding provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), State of Florida Dept. of Economic Opportunities, and the Florida Housing Finance Corporation, the City was able to prevent evictions for 576 at-risk tenants and prevent foreclosures for 150 low-and moderate- income homeowners. In addition, the City used Community Development Block Grant CV funds and Coronavirus Relief funds for general emergency services and case management that provided direct utility payments, budgeting assistance, and other wrap-around services. Wrap-around services included access to the Tenant Based Rental Assistance Program, which relieved the cost burden for low-income residents for a period of up to two years. Many residents had limited access to food, therefore the City funded two food pantries. Additionally, the City, Feeding South Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation coordinated a drive-through food location utilizing City staff, and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers. Many business owners were financially impacted by the distance requirements. To assist and stabilize small business owners, in the City of Hollywood, the City provided 102 small business assistance grants to fund job retention/creation and stabilization. The COVID-19 Pandemic caused unprecedented psychological strain to Hollywood residents. To assist, the City funded the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to expand services of NAMI Broward mental health programs in Hollywood. NAMI Broward County offers free support groups, educational programs, and referral services to Hollywood residents living with mental illness, their families, caregivers, and friends. Every day people overcome the challenges of mental illness to do the things they enjoy, several of them have become program leaders for NAMI Broward. says Sandra Cumper, Executive Director of NAMI Broward. The Broward County Continuum of Care provides varied homeless assistance programs to suit individual needs and requirements. The City funded the TaskForce for Ending Homelessness to provide outreach services for homeless persons in the City of Hollywood daily. “The COVID-19 Health Emergency highlighted the importance of Community Development funding,” said Anthony Grisby, Community Development Division Manager. “These funding sources not only allow for the standard stabilizing activities for low- and moderate-income households but are also capable of responding to a fast-moving public health emergency that threatens the overall population.” The City continues other non-COVID services including housing rehabilitation, first-time homebuyer, workforce training, after-school tutoring, career development training for homeless youth, housing counseling for persons with disabilities, employment case management and job and vocational materials, professional counseling and supportive services to veterans and victims of domestic violence.
