  • From Anonymous Donation To Cultural Treasure - Levis Jewish Community Center Gifts Historic Kimonos To Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens | sun-times

From Anonymous Donation To Cultural Treasure - Levis Jewish Community Center Gifts Historic Kimonos To Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens Aventura Digest Jun 25, 2026 The Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center (Levis JCC) Has Donated Two Japanese Kimonos And Accompanying Artifacts To Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens, Transforming An Anonymous Donation Into The Start Of A New Cultural Partnership Focused On Preservation, Education And Community Connection. What began as a donation to the Levis JCC Resale Boutique in East Boca has evolved into a meaningful act of cultural stewardship. The items, left in a cardboard box at the Boutique’s donation drop-off door, arrived with no identifying information about their origin or ownership. Eric Goldman, Vice President of retail services, recognized the craftsmanship and potential historical value of the garments and later proposed donating the pieces to the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens to ensure proper preservation and interpretation. According to Carla Stansifer, Chief Curator, the donation includes a white wedding kimono (uchikake in Japanese) possibly dating to the 1920s, as well as a black formal kimono (tomosode) that would have been worn during traditional ceremonies. Final details are pending confirmation by Morikami’s curatorial team. The items will be added to Morikami’s Museum Collection, where their artistry, symbolism and ceremonial significance can be preserved and shared with the public. “This was a moment where we had to pause and think beyond resale value,” said Goldman. “These pieces clearly carried cultural and historical weight. Partnering with Morikami ensures they are preserved with the care and expertise they deserve, while allowing their story to live on in a way that benefits the broader community.” “We are honored to receive these garments and help steward their story,” said James Rodgers, the Museum’s Collection Manager/Registrar. “Kimonos are deeply symbolic, reflecting artistry, tradition, and important life moments. We are grateful to the Levis JCC for recognizing their significance and entrusting them to us. We look forward to exploring ways to share their significance with the community.” This donation marks the beginning of a collaborative relationship between the Levis JCC and Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, with opportunities for future programming, educational initiatives, and community experiences already under consideration. • Navigating Travel Plans: When Travel Advisors Can Take You Further Than AI | sun-times

Navigating Travel Plans: When Travel Advisors Can Take You Further Than AI By Feature Impact Jun 25, 2026 From Comparing Prices To Dreaming Up Bucket-List Destinations, Artificial Intelligence Has Become A Starting Point For Millions Of Travelers Who Are Turning To Tech For Early-Stage Planning. However, travelers consistently emphasize the importance of having accessible expert support during the process. In fact, 96% of U.S. travelers said having access to a human for support is important when booking a vacation, according to a new survey commissioned by ALG Vacations, a leading provider of vacation packages to top global destinations, including 48% who said it’s “extremely” important. Though 24% of survey respondents said the main way they use AI is for comparing prices or finding travel deals, 63% of Americans said they trust a travel advisor as much as or more than AI tools when planning a vacation, underscoring that AI alone is not enough for most U.S. travelers. Going beyond the planning phase, 77% of survey respondents said that even if they use AI for travel planning, they’re still likely to rely on a human to make final decisions, especially for booking, payment or resolving issues. In honor of Travel Advisor Appreciation Month, consider these ways travelers can take advantage of the expertise of an advisor to get the most out of every trip. Navigating Travel Uncertainty Today’s travel landscape can feel unpredictable, from shifting policies to headlines that make things feel bigger or closer than they actually are, but that doesn’t mean travelers should avoid taking the trip; it just means they should plan smarter. Because 42% of travelers fear important details could be missed if relying entirely on AI to plan a trip, that’s where a travel advisor comes in to help separate what’s real from what’s just noise. This expertise allows for smarter, more confident decisions, and aids in choosing destinations that align with travelers’ current comfort levels, always with safety in mind. Unlocking Added Value Planning thoughtfully doesn’t mean spending more, it means getting more for the amount spent. Travel advisors often have access to exclusive perks and upgrades not directly available to consumers or pulled in by AI prompts, providing added value that goes beyond the cost of the vacation. In addition to added amenities, advisors’ insider recommendations can help match those perks to travelers’ preferences. In fact, for vacations booked during the month of May, travelers can take advantage of The Great Getaway Savings Event from ALG Vacations, which features up to $950 in savings through a combination of instant savings, promo codes, air credits and group offers on trips to destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, the continental United States, Europe, Central America, Dominican Republic and the South Pacific. Providing Protection and Peace of Mind Modern travelers want options, and the ability to adjust plans, add protection or pivot when needed has become a top priority. A travel advisor can assist with adding that flexibility through travel protection that provides extra peace of mind – whether that means rebooking or changing plans if something comes up. At the end of the day, it’s about helping travelers feel prepared so they can relax and truly enjoy their vacations. Stepping in When Things Go Awry When trips become complex, multi-destination or disrupted by delays or cancellations, travelers are more likely to want a real person involved. In fact, 39% of survey respondents worry there will be no support if something goes wrong. If a flight is canceled or a resort overbooks, travelers aren’t stuck refreshing an app; they have an expert there every step of the way – before, during and after the trip – listening to them, learning about their preferences, advocating for them and providing guidance based on first-hand experience throughout the process. Through its four pillars of excellence, Food Security, Case Management, Clinical Services, and Information & Referral, JCS delivers critical resources that improve quality of life for people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances. One of the most visible ways JCS supports the community is through its food assistance programs. As the cost of living continues to rise across South Florida, many families, seniors, and individuals struggle to afford basic necessities. The JCS Kosher Food Bank provides nutritious Kosher food and household essentials to community members experiencing food insecurity, helping ensure that no one must choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. For homebound seniors and vulnerable adults, JCS also operates congregate meals sites, home-delivered meals and grocery assistance programs that help older adults maintain their health, dignity, and independence while aging safely in place. JCS is also nationally recognized for its work supporting Holocaust Survivors, one of the most vulnerable populations in Miami-Dade County. Through its Holocaust Survivor Assistance Program, JCS provides comprehensive case management, home care coordination, reparations assistance, emergency support, and personalized services that allow Survivors to remain safely in their homes and age with dignity. For many Survivors, JCS staff members are more than service providers, they are trusted advocates, companions, and lifelines who help navigate complex healthcare, financial, and social service systems. The organization's commitment to older adults extends beyond Holocaust Survivors. Through its Older Adult Case Management Program, JCS helps seniors access healthcare, transportation, benefits, financial assistance, social services, and community resources. The goal is simple but powerful: helping older adults maintain their independence, remain connected to their communities, and enjoy the highest possible quality of life. As Miami-Dade's senior population continues to grow, these services have become increasingly important for families seeking support for aging loved ones. JCS also provides critical support for individuals and families facing personal crises. Through Shalom Bayit, the agency's domestic abuse support program, domestic abuse survivors receive confidential case management, safety planning, advocacy, and trauma-informed services. The program empowers individuals to rebuild their lives while ensuring they have access to the resources and support necessary to achieve long-term safety and stability. Mental health services represent another cornerstone of JCS' work. The agency provides professional counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families experiencing a wide range of emotional and behavioral health challenges. From anxiety and depression to grief, trauma, relationship issues, and life transitions, JCS clinicians help clients develop the tools and resilience needed to overcome obstacles and improve their overall well-being. Specialized services are also available for children, youth, families, ensuring culturally competent care for diverse populations throughout Miami-Dade County. In addition to direct services, JCS plays a vital role in connecting people to help through its Information and Referral programs. JCS Access serves as a central entry point for individuals seeking assistance, helping community members navigate available resources and identify the services that best meet their needs. When a person does not know where to turn, JCS Access provides guidance, support, and referrals that can make all the difference. The agency's impact extends even further through its operation of 211 Miami and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, these services connect callers to critical resources, crisis intervention, emotional support, and emergency assistance. Whether someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, searching for housing resources, seeking food assistance, or simply needs help navigating available services, trained specialists are available around the clock to provide support and direction. • Addressing Food Insecurity In Miami-Dade: How JCS Senior Services Programs Support Vulnerable Older Adults | sun-times

Addressing Food Insecurity In Miami-Dade: How JCS Senior Services Programs Support Vulnerable Older Adults Aventura Digest Jun 25, 2026 Food Insecurity Continues To Be A Growing Concern Across Miami-Dade County, Particularly For Older Adults Living On Fixed Incomes. Rising Food Costs, Housing Expenses, And Transportation Barriers Have Made It Increasingly Difficult For Many Seniors To Access Consistent, Nutritious Meals. For Frail And Vulnerable Individuals, Food Insecurity Is Not Simply A Matter Of Hunger. It Is A Critical Issue That Affects Health, Threatens Independence, And Reduces Overall Quality Of Life. A core part of Jewish Community Services of South Florida’s (JCS) mission is addressing food insecurity – particularly for vulnerable seniors. Through a multitude of food-focused programs such as the JCS Delivers, Senior Ride, Congregate Meals, Kosher Food Bank, and Kosher Home Delivered Meals Programs, the agency works to ensure that older adults have access to nutritious, Kosher food, social engagement, and supportive services that allow these treasured community members to age in place with dignity. Many seniors in Miami-Dade County rely on fixed incomes from Social Security or other public benefits. A portion of the clients served by JCS live on less than $1,300 per month, with some surviving on as little as $900 monthly. For these individuals, even small increases in food costs can make it extremely difficult to eat three meals a day. Public benefits such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) often help fill gaps in seniors’ diets. However, when SNAP benefits were suspended for the month of November 2025, many seniors faced an immediate food crisis. Without their life-sustaining SNAP benefits, purchasing groceries became nearly impossible for many of the clients served by JCS. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, JCS stepped in to provide grocery gift cards to seniors who rely on SNAP benefits. This emergency assistance ensured that vulnerable older adults could continue purchasing food during a particularly challenging period. The response from clients was one of profound gratitude. For many, this support meant the difference between having food on the table and going hungry. JCS Programs Supporting Senior Food Security To address both immediate and long-term food insecurity, JCS operates several interconnected programs designed to meet the diverse needs of older adults. JCS Delivers Shopping Program The JCS Delivers Shopping Program provides extremely low-income, homebound seniors with personalized grocery deliveries and essential household items, ensuring they have access to the necessities needed to live safely and independently. Each delivery also serves as a wellness check, offering regular contact and care to some of the most isolated members of our community. JCS Kosher Home Delivered Meals Program JCS’ Kosher Home Delivered Meals Program provides pre-made, frozen Kosher meals to homebound, nutritionally insecure seniors across Miami-Dade County who are unable to prepare meals for themselves due to frailty. Clients range in age from 60 to over 100, with many living on fixed incomes. Often, clients are below the poverty line of $15,560 annually for a single person. Many live alone, making this program a vital source not only of nutritious meals but also of social connection, regular wellness checks, and compassionate human contact. JCS Senior Ride Program The JCS Senior Ride Program provides reliable transportation for seniors to attend JCS’ congregate lunch meal sites, grocery shopping, doctor’s appointments, and community activities. The program provides more than just transportation, it offers seniors a vital connection to the services, support, and community they need to live independently. By offering safe, reliable rides to congregate meal sites, grocery stores, and community activities, the program helps older adults maintain their health, autonomy, and social engagement. JCS Congregate Meal Program The JCS Congregate Meals Program serves a hot, Kosher lunch five days a week (excluding federal and Jewish holidays) in Miami Beach, and four days a week in Aventura. By providing nutritious, Kosher meals in a welcoming community setting, the JCS Congregate Meals Program supports the well-being of older adults while fostering meaningful social connection. The program offers more than just a meal; it creates a vibrant environment where seniors can engage in activities that promote physical, emotional, and social health. With no income restrictions and inclusive participation, the program ensures all older adults have access to nourishment, community, and friendship. Maria’s Story Maria (name has been changed), a JCS client and 82-year-old Miami Beach resident living alone, survives on less than $900 per month in Social Security income. After paying rent, utilities, and medication expenses, very little remained for groceries. When her SNAP benefits were temporarily suspended in November 2025, Maria did not know how she would afford to feed herself. Through JCS services, she received assistance that helped stabilize her situation. She was provided with grocery gift cards during the SNAP disruption, transportation to grocery stores, and access to meals at the JCS Miami Beach Congregate Meal Site. These supportive services ensured that she continued to enjoy balanced, nutritious meals during a difficult time. Today, she regularly attends the JCS Miami Beach Congregate Meal Site, where she not only receives a nutritious Kosher lunch, but also participates in activities such as art classes and Bingo. She often shares that the program has helped her feel healthier, more connected, and less isolated. Food insecurity among older adults remains a significant challenge in Miami-Dade County. Through strong community partnerships, dedicated staff, and the support of generous donors, JCS helps ensure that vulnerable seniors have access to nutritious food and compassionate care. For many, these services are a lifeline, providing the stability and support they need to age with dignity, maintain their independence, and avoid the devastating consequences of hunger and isolation. • Aventura Youth Council Offers Young Leaders A Chance To Shape Their Community | sun-times

Aventura Youth Council Offers Young Leaders A Chance To Shape Their Community Aventura Digest Jun 25, 2026 As Communities Across The Country Seek Ways To Encourage Civic Engagement Among Younger Generations, The City Of Aventura Is Providing Local Students With A Unique Opportunity To Become Active Participants In The Future Of Their City. Through Its Youth Council Program, Aventura Is Inviting Qualified High School Students To Apply For Member Positions And Gain Firsthand Experience In Public Service, Leadership, And Community Involvement. Applications for the Youth Council are currently being accepted through Monday, June 29th, 2026. The program is open to Aventura residents who will be enrolled as juniors or seniors in a public or private high school during the 2026–2027 academic year. Selected students will serve as representatives of their peers while working closely with city leaders on a variety of educational, civic, and community-focused initiatives. The Youth Council consists of seven members selected by the City Manager. While the program offers valuable leadership experience, its broader mission is to encourage young people to become engaged citizens who understand the importance of contributing to the communities in which they live. Youth participation in civic activities has never been more important. In an era where many interactions take place online, community involvement provides young people with meaningful opportunities to connect with neighbors, understand local issues, and develop a sense of responsibility toward the common good. Programs such as the Aventura Youth Council help students move beyond observing local government and community events from a distance by allowing them to actively participate in the decision-making process and community service efforts. Research consistently shows that students who engage in volunteerism, leadership programs, and civic activities are more likely to become active citizens as adults. They develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. These experiences also foster confidence and help young people discover how their voices can influence positive change. For many students, serving on a youth council represents their first opportunity to work directly with government officials and community leaders. Through meetings, volunteer projects, and public events, participants gain valuable insight into how local government operates and how community programs are developed and implemented. This exposure can inspire future careers in public service, education, law, business, or nonprofit leadership. The City of Aventura’s Youth Council also serves as a bridge between local government and the younger population. Teenagers often have unique perspectives on issues affecting schools, public spaces, recreation programs, and community engagement. By including youth voices in civic discussions, cities can better understand the needs and priorities of younger residents while fostering a culture of inclusion and collaboration. In addition to attending scheduled meetings, Youth Council members are expected to participate in volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. These activities allow students to build connections with residents of all ages while making a tangible impact on the community. Whether assisting at city-sponsored events, supporting educational initiatives, or contributing to local service projects, members gain practical experience in leadership through action. Participation in community activities also benefits students on a personal level. Colleges, scholarship committees, and future employers increasingly value applicants who demonstrate a commitment to service and leadership. Beyond strengthening resumes, however, community involvement helps young people develop empathy, social awareness, and a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing their city. As Aventura continues to invest in the next generation of leaders, the Youth Council stands as an example of how local governments can empower young residents to become engaged, informed, and responsible citizens. By providing students with opportunities to serve, lead, and contribute, the program helps cultivate the civic-minded leaders who will shape the future of the community. Students who meet the eligibility requirements and are willing to commit to meetings and volunteer service throughout the school year are encouraged to apply. Applications must be completed online through the City of Aventura website: www.cityofaventura.com . For additional information, interested applicants may contact the Office of the City Clerk at: (305) 466-8901. Or by email at: cityclerk@cityofaventura.gov . Being a part of The Youth Council with help students develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Previous Next

FIU Medicine is partnering with Baptist Health South Florida, which will be the care provider and will manage the center’s operations. The center will anchor FIU’s growing clinical enterprise, integrating education, research and patient care to establish a premier hub for academic medicine in South Florida. “The Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center represents the kind of visionary investment that elevates an entire community,” Robins & Morton Operations Manager Johnathan Peavy said. “This project will not only expand access to care, it will strengthen the pipeline of future physicians and support the long‑term health of our South Florida community. We’re proud to help build a facility that will serve as a hub for education, research, and compassionate care for generations to come.” Robins & Morton and Thornton Construction are partnering in a joint venture as the general contractor for the project. • The War On Sunscreen: How Misinformation May Be Undermining Cancer Prevention | sun-times

The War On Sunscreen: How Misinformation May Be Undermining Cancer Prevention By Feature Impact Jun 25, 2026 Despite Its Wide Recognition As An Effective Tool For Skin Cancer Prevention, Many Americans Still Say They Aren't Sure How Sunscreen Works. In Fact, Confusion About Its Use And Misinformation Persist, Especially On Social Media. According to a national survey conducted by Atomik Research on behalf of the NonProfit Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA), 53% of the 2,000 adult respondents said they've seen claims that sunscreen ingredients may be harmful while 59% reported they're concerned about what's in sunscreen and 38% don't believe sunscreen is safe and effective. This sunscreen confusion highlights a central challenge in preventing Skin Cancer, which is the most common form of Cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among the various types of Skin Cancer, 9 out of 10, including Melanoma, are linked to exposure to UltraViolet (UV) Radiation, according to the MRA. The survey found most Americans have a basic understanding of the risks of sun exposure, including the more than 8 in 10 who recognize spending long hours in the sun contributes to Melanoma risk. However, roughly one-quarter said they rarely or never use sunscreen when outdoors. Reducing exposure to UV Radiation lowers the risk of Skin Cancer, making sunscreen a key part of prevention, even during those everyday moments you may not immediately recognize as "risky," like a short walk through a parking lot or an hour sitting in the bleachers at a sporting event. To combat the confusion, it's important to first understand how sunscreen works. It absorbs or blocks UV Radiation from reaching the skin, preventing DNA damage that can cause Cancer. "Conflicting or incomplete information can make people less likely to wear sunscreen consistently," said Dr. Joan Levy, Chief Science Officer at the MRA, "but the science on sun protection is clear, and sunscreen is one of the most effective tools to prevent melanoma." Active ingredients in sunscreen in the U.S. undergo rigorous review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which evaluates them as Over-The-Counter Drugs - a standard which requires extensive testing and contributes to a more limited set of approved UV filters compared to Europe, where sunscreens are regulated as cosmetics. The FDA is evaluating additional methodologies for assessing sunscreen ingredients, a process that could, according to Levy, expand the number of approved UV filters available in the U.S. While Melanoma remains the deadliest form of Skin Cancer, real progress is being made in Melanoma research. Recent advances are improving outcomes for many patients with the disease, though approximately 50% of patients do not respond to current treatments, according to the MRA, underscoring why prevention and early detection are critical. "Treatments such as Immunotherapy have significantly improved outcomes for many Melanoma patients, but we should never need to treat what we could have prevented," Levy said. • Think Before You Act | sun-times

Think Before You Act By Bryan Golden Jun 25, 2026 Acting Without First Thinking Is Too Common. It Is Called Reacting. It Leads To Unintended Negative Consequences. Problems Are Needlessly Created Or Exacerbated. In This State, You Are Driven By Emotion Rather Than Logic. Anger, Jealousy, Bitterness, Hurt, Fear, And Distrust Are Some Of The Feelings Which Bypass Rational Thought. Thinking after acting makes as much sense as a carpenter who cuts first and then measures. Once cut, a board cannot be made longer. Actions, once taken, can't be undone. A skilled carpenter measures carefully before cutting. Being prudent means thinking before acting. Thinking before acting is responding. This is where your behavior is well thought out and planned. Just because someone else acts does not compel you to react. Thinking puts reason before emotion. Without a consciously thought-out response, you revert to a knee jerk reaction. This is your default automatic behavior. What do you say or do when upset, frustrated, or angry? It's common to become trapped in the same patterns of reactive behavior. Other people will pick up on this and use it to manipulate you. Since emotions cloud your ability for clear thinking, take time to calm down whenever you are upset. Acting in haste bypasses the thinking stage. Rarely is there a pressing need to act immediately. More time is on your side than you realize. Once you are calm, you are in a position to begin assessing your situation. Start by answering a few questions. What happened? Does it really matter? Do you need to respond at all? What are you trying to accomplish? The objective answers stimulate your thinking process. Not only do you want to formulate an appropriate strategy for your response, you also need to keep things in perspective. "Don't sweat the small stuff," should always be kept in mind. Many circumstances, which at first seem upsetting, are insignificant when compared to the big picture of your life. These situations typically require little or no action. You can just let them go. When action is necessary, keep your objective in mind. Know what it is you are looking to accomplish. Consider all of the options available to you. Identify the pros and cons for each option. Objectivity is essential. It may be helpful bouncing your thoughts off a neutral person who you trust. Before deciding on your appropriate response, make sure you gather all of the facts directly from the source. Using second or third hand information as a basis for your decisions is a faulty strategy which leads to erroneous conclusions. Realizing a short-term gain at a long-term expense is self-defeating. Take care not to burn bridges if possible. You never know what circumstances and people you will encounter in the future. Well thought out action is more likely to solve problems and preserve relationships than an emotionally fueled reaction. Actions have consequences. Think things through from different perspectives. What impact will your actions have on the various people and situations involved? Are you acting in your best interest or is there some desire for retribution? Your actions should improve your circumstances, not make them worse. Before deciding on a particular course of action, run the different options through "what if scenarios." This approach forces you to consider all of the various cause and effect relationships. You want to anticipate what impact your action will have so you are not caught by surprise. How will other people react? What action will they take? What are the benefits and liabilities to you? A well thought out response gives you the best chance of taking appropriate action which yields the desired results. Use these suggestions to help you think before you act.
