
City Of North Miami Honors Gepsie Metellus With Street Naming As Sant La Celebrates 25 Years Of Service

The City Of North Miami, Led By Vice Mayor Kassandra Timothe, Held A Street-Naming Ceremony On Wednesday, October 22, To Honor Gepsie Metellus, Executive Director Of The Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, For Her Decades Of Service And Leadership In The Haitian American Community. The Newly Designated Gepsie M. Metellus Street Spans Northeast 134th Street from Northeast 9th Avenue To West Dixie Highway.
The ceremony coincided with Sant La’s 25th Anniversary and came as Metellus prepares for her retirement — marking a milestone for both the organization and the broader North Miami community.
Vice Mayor Timothe spearheaded the initiative, praising Metellus for her “tireless advocacy for equity, education and opportunity” and her lasting contributions to the Haitian American experience in South Florida.
Metellus expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying, “I am truly humbled by this honor. Sant La has been a part of this community since our beginnings. This street naming is not just for me — it’s for every person who has walked with us, believed in Sant La’s mission and worked to ensure that our Haitian community has the opportunity to thrive.”
The event also featured remarks from local officials and community leaders, along with performances and tributes celebrating Metellus’s leadership and Sant La’s 25 years of impact.
“What a remarkable moment for our Sant La family,” the organization said in a statement. “We proudly joined the City of North Miami and our many community partners to celebrate the naming of Gepsie M. Metellus Street — a lasting tribute to our beloved Executive Director, whose leadership and vision have shaped Sant La and inspired countless lives.
“This honor comes as we mark 25 years of service to South Florida’s Haitian community — a milestone that reflects not only our past achievements but also the enduring strength of our mission. Gepsie’s legacy will continue to guide us as we move forward, building on the foundation she helped create.”
