A Dramatic Future Awaits: The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood Will Expand July 28, 2022 Share As part of the City of Hollywood's vision to increase arts programming in the city, the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood will expand its current Kagey Home facility with the construction of a new, nearly 5,000-square-foot arts education wing that will be distinct and contemporary. The new wing will provide visual arts and multimedia studio classrooms, along with a multi-purpose room for dance, drama, artist talks, film screenings, meeting space and more. This building will be a visual marquee in Downtown Hollywood drawing residents and visitors in our region to the Center. Additionally, the new education building incorporates an outdoor courtyard to enhance the visitor experience. The dramatic design will merge with the existing two-story, 1924 Mediterranean Revival architecture of the Kagey Home, which houses the Center’s Galleries and Administrative Offices. When completed, the new wing, with its gleaming façade and swooping rooftop, will provide the Center and the City with a unique architectural distinction in Broward County of having adjoining, functional spaces built about 100 years apart. The Home of the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood is located in the former home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kagey, a founding family in Hollywood. The home was built in 1924 and is a beautiful example of Mediterranean Revival architecture. It is one of Hollywood’s first show-place homes and was completed a year before the City of Hollywood was incorporated. Jack Kagey was the Sales Manager of Joseph W. Young’s Hollywood Land and Water Company. He earned the seed money to build the home by winning a contest held by Young for his salesmen during the height of the 1920’s Real Estate Boom. The Kageys were in the home for just two years when, in September 1926, the structure withstood a devastating hurricane that ended the land boom. The home continued to be used as a private residence until 1960, when it was converted into a funeral home and doubled in size to 12,000 square feet. The expansion included the addition of a chapel along the east side, which later became the Center’s Main Gallery. Many of the home’s original features from the 1920’s have been retained, such as the glass doorknobs, wrought-iron railings, tiles on the second-floor balcony, wood moldings, floors and arches. In January of 1990, the property was purchased by the City of Hollywood to become the new home of the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, which was previously located in a building on Hollywood Beach. The Mansion was renovated with Private and Historical Grant monies and opened on February 2nd, 1992. About the Center The Center was founded in 1975 as the only Visual Arts Non-Profit Organization in south Broward County, operating out of a small community space on Hollywood Beach. The Center now manages visual arts galleries in the renovated Kagey Home built in 1924, the Arts School that is adjacent to the main facility and a 500-seat theater in Hollywood’s burgeoning Downtown. The Center is the third oldest Arts Non-Profit in Broward County and the Kagey Home is a cultural landmark for the Mediterranean Revival architecture of its circa-1924 building. In March 2019, the Center was designated for $2.5 Million in funds from the City of Hollywood towards its Arts Ignite! building initiative, as part of a General Obligation Bond referendum that was approved by Hollywood voters. These funds have been allocated toward the expansion of Center facilities with construction of a new Arts Education Building that will adjoin the Kagey Home. When completed, as early as 2023. The Center is a regional leader among South Florida arts institutions in presenting originally curated visual-arts exhibitions by national and local artists and standards-based, multi-disciplinary arts education programs for the youth. The Center impacts about 40,000 people each year through its programs and facilities. Contemporary artists exhibit in four ground-floor gallery spaces while the upstairs Community Gallery presents exhibitions by K-12 students who study under some of the most dedicated arts teachers in the region. Each year, 125+ artists representing a vast range of backgrounds and artistic media are exhibited in our galleries. We are a two-time host organization for the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Program (2011 and 2017). Through its programs and facilities, the Center fosters a creative environment where new and challenging work can flourish through exhibitions and art-making activities that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity. Become An Art Buyer The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood’s Exposed Exhibition and Fundraiser returns with an opening reception on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 pm. The Exhibition will run through Friday, September 30th, 2022 with the draw set for that night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Exposed gives the opportunity for art patrons to become art buyers during an exciting and lively fundraising affair in which every ticket holder takes home an original work of art for their collection. The event will feature more than 70 contemporary artists in an exhibition that culminates with an exciting closing-night draw for participants and their guests. Names are drawn one-by-one for the chance to select any work of art that has not yet been claimed. Everyone's a winner at Exposed! For the 14th Edition of this popular exhibition and fundraiser, the Center will give ticket buyers on the closing-night draw two options for selecting their artwork – in person in the Center’s Main Gallery or they can have a designated Center staff member pick their artwork by proxy while watching the event live streamed on the Center's Facebook Live. For details on how proxies work, please call: (954) 921-3274. Funds raised at Exposed will support the Center’s year-round calendar of gallery exhibitions and events. This is an excellent way to add to your collection while also supporting the Center. Ticket buyers who choose to participate in the closing-night draw in person may bring a plus one to the gallery; the draw will be held on Friday, September 30th, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. Draw. All tickets holders will receive complimentary admission during the exhibition dates and may schedule a private tour with the Center’s Curator. Sheet Pan Cajun Shrimp Fajitas with Bell Pepper, Onion and Spicy Ranch Recipe courtesy of Albertsons Total time: 30 minutes Servings: 4 • 2 Green Bell Peppers • 2 Yellow Bell Peppers • 1 Lime • 1 Medium Red Onion • 2 Tablespoons of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil • 1 1/2 Pounds of Raw, Peeled Shrimp, Fresh or Frozen • 5 Teaspoons of Cajun Seasoning, divided • 1 Teaspoon of Salt • 1/2 Cup of Ranch Dressing • 12 Small Flour Tortillas Preheat the oven to 450 F. Wash and dry the Green Bell Peppers, the Yellow Bell Peppers and the Lime. Trim, seed and slice the Bell Peppers lengthwise into thin strips; transfer them to a large baking sheet. Peel, halve and slice the Onion lengthwise into thin pieces; add them to a baking sheet with Bell Peppers. Drizzle the Veggies with the Oil, toss to combine and spread in an even layer. Bake until the Veggies have softened slightly, about 5 minutes. If using Frozen Shrimp, place them in a colander and run them under cold water to thaw them slightly. Place the Shrimp on a clean towel or paper towels and pat dry. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Arrange the Shrimp over the Veggies then sprinkle them with 4 Teaspoons of Cajun Seasoning and Salt; toss to combine and spread in an even layer. Bake until the Veggies are tender and Shrimp are cooked through, 5-7 minutes. Remove them from the oven. Cut the Lime into wedges. In a small bowl, stir the Ranch Dressing and the remaining Cajun Seasoning. Warm the Tortillas in a skillet, oven or microwave, if desired. Divide the Tortillas between plates and fill them with the Shrimp and the Veggies; drizzle them with the Spicy Ranch and serve them with a squeeze of Lime. Cheese Tortellini and Cauliflower with Creamy Spinach Marinara Recipe courtesy of Albertsons Total time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 • 2 - 10 Ounce Bags of Cauliflower Florets • 18 Ounces of Cheese Tortellini, Fresh or Frozen • 1/2 Tablespoon of Salt • 1 - 24 Ounce Jar of Marinara Sauce • 8 Fluid Ounces of Heavy Whipping Cream • 1/2 Teaspoon of Basil, dried • 1/4 Teaspoon of Black Pepper • 2 - 5 Ounces Packages of Baby Spinach Fill a large pot halfway with hot water, cover it and bring it to a boil. Uncover it then add the Cauliflower, the Tortellini and the Salt; stir for a few seconds. Cook, stirring occasionally, until just tender, about 5 minutes, or cook according to the package’s instructions. In a separate large pot over medium heat, stir the Marinara Sauce, the Cream, the Basil and the Black Pepper to combine and bring the Marinara Sauce to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook it until it is slightly thickened, 3-4 minutes. Wash and dry the Spinach. When the Marinara Sauce has thickened, add the Spinach to the pot in handfuls, waiting for the Spinach to wilt slightly before adding the next handful. Remove from the heat and cover it to keep it warm. When the Cauliflower and the Tortellini are done, drain and add to the pot with the Creamy Marinara Sauce; stir to combine. To serve, divide the Pasta between plates or bowls. Garlic-Parmesan Chicken Tenders with Green Beans and Honey Mustard Dip Recipe courtesy of Albertsons Total time: 30 minutes Servings: 4 • 2 Tablespoons of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, divided • 1/4 Cup of Mayonnaise • 1 Teaspoon of Garlic Powder • 1 Teaspoon of Salt, divided • 2/3 Cup of Parmesan Cheese, shredded • 1/2 Cup of Panko Breadcrumbs • 1/2 Teaspoon of Paprika • 1 1/2 Pounds of Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts • 1 1/2 Pounds of Green Beans • 1/2 Cup of Honey Mustard Dressing Preheat the oven to 450 F. Coat a baking sheet with 2 Teaspoons of Oil. In a medium bowl, stir the Mayo, the Garlic Powder and a 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt to combine. In a separate medium bowl, stir the Parmesan, the Breadcrumbs and the Paprika to combine. Pat the Chicken dry with paper towels and slice into 3/4-inch Chicken Tenders. Add to a bowl with the Mayo Mixture and toss to coat. Working in batches, dredge the Chicken Tenders in the Breadcrumb Coating, pressing to adhere. Transfer to a baking sheet. Bake them until the Chicken Tenders start to turn golden, about 10 minutes. On a clean cutting board, wash, dry and trim the Green Beans and Set them aside. When the chicken is golden, flip and bake it until it is cooked through for 6-8 minutes and remove it from the oven. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the remaining Oil and swirl it to coat the bottom. Add the Green Beans and the remaining Salt; cook, stirring it occasionally, until it is tender-crisp for 4-5 minutes and remove it from the heat. Divide the Chicken Tenders and the Green Beans between the plates. Serve them with the Dressing for dipping. The Hollywood Beach Broadwalk Half Marathon & 5K! Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet? How about a half marathon to start preparing for in 2022, that could help you lose some Covid weight. Plus you will be able to watch the sunrise over the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and hear the sounds of waves crashing as you run just steps from the beach! Win! Win! If that interests you then here is some good news. The Hollywood Beach Half Marathons and 5Ks are back. Hollywood Beach is a popular stop on the Elite Events South Florida Half Marathon Tour. Hollywood hosts multiple races, the only differences in the events are the Fall race which is called the Hollywood Beach Oceanside and the Winter Race which is called the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk Half. The beautiful pre-dawn and sunrise start and run along the Broadwalk are a huge draw for people from all over the U.S. The events take athletes through the eclectic, beautiful area and many stay in local hotels for the weekend. What To Expect The event features a start right near Hollywood North Beach Park. At the start of the race runners will run along the picturesque Hollywood Broadwalk for miles as the sun comes up. A quick U-turn takes athletes back heading north on the Broadwalk with a good opportunity to see how your friends are doing amid magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. The course takes runners to North Surf Road to again run parallel to the Atlantic, running through a shaded tree tunnel before starting a second loop, until reaching nearly the end of the Broadwalk and Harry Berry Park. A beautiful finisher's medal for both the Half Marathon and 5K plus lots of snacks await at the finish line! As an added benefit you will also get a close up tour of the best that Hollywood Beach has to offer. Both races are also a part of the very popular South Florida Half Marathon Tour! Can I Walk The Event? Walkers are welcome at all of the Elite Events! There is a 3.5 hour time limit for the half marathon. After 3.5 hours, the course will open up to traffic. At that point, you must obey all traffic laws as if you were a pedestrian. You will still receive your finisher medal as long as you are close to finishing after the 3.5 hour time limit. Police, Volunteers, and race crew will be dismissed after 3.5 hours. All of the finish line and event equipment will be cleaned up after 3.5 hours. Important Information Early Packet Pick Up: Friday January 14th, 2022 - Location TBD Race Day Packet Pick Up: 5:30 a.m. - 6:10a.m. Time Limit: 3.5 hours Water Stops: There will be water and gatorade about every 2 miles or less. Included With Entry Aside from being known for the best "swag" aka finisher medals and race shirts, Elite Events has their FREE Elite Events Tracker App at every race. The app allows spectators to track your progress live on the course and provides you with instant race results. Your accomplishments will be stored in their ‘Lifetime Stats’ database so you can keep track of all of your Elite Events results in one place and see how they stack up against every Elite Event participant ever! Awards Pick Up Since the event timing technology allows for live results, you are able to receive your award as soon as you cross the finish line. After you've enjoyed the complimentary post-race refreshments, report to the awards area where one of their team members will present you with your finish results and award. The event will be held Saturday, January 22nd, 2022 between 6:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The National Anthem and Pre-Race Instructions start at 6:20 a.m. and both races start at 6:30am. The starting line will be at North Beach Park 3601 North Ocean Drive Hollywood, Florida 33019. Parking There are only a little over 1,000 parking spots close to the race venue and start. It is highly recommended that you carpool, bike or stay at a nearby hotel. There is limited parking north of the Park available on the side streets at the Hollywood Beach daily rate. All athletes parking on the side streets must exit to the north (right) to East Dania Beach Road/A1A only. There will be free parking inside Hollywood North Beach Park but space is limited to about 300 spots. We expect this lot to be completely full by 5:55 a.m. at the latest! There is a;sp parking available at the Garfield Garage at Charnow Park at the Hollywood Beach daily rate. Restrooms are available at Charnow Park. After the event all athletes must exit south (left) on Ocean Drive/A1A only. A Dedicated Public Servant: Hallandale Beach Has Lost One of Its Heroes By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper September 2, 2021 Share Bill with his mother Elise was a long-time fan of car racing, he proudly showcased his shiny red 1986 Corvette in local car shows Last Tuesday, Hallandale Beach lost another great Hero, Vice Mayor, Friend, Veteran and Dedicated Public Servant, Vice Mayor William ‘Bill” Julian. I first met Bill at a Crime Watch Meeting. As a long resident for years, he had decided to give back to the city and get involved in community service. During that time, former Mayor Joe Scavo, who was a retired New York Police Officer, was encouraging Bill to get involved and run for office. We had some great volunteers at that time in The Crime Watch. Chief Lawrence Faragher was our current Chief and Assistant, Chief Tom Magill, who later became Chief, had started a strong commitment, to address the rampant drug dealing, that was taking place in our city. The multi-pronged approach, included reestablishing the Crime Watch. Bill stepped up and became the President of The Crime Watch. Bill was also there to volunteer. He was an active member of The Crime Watch and later in 2001, he was elected to the Commission. In addition to The Crime Watch, Bill was also volunteering and working for the most vulnerable and underserved in the City. Chief Tom Magill, began our PAL Program, which is still going strong today. Bill and the entire Commission, were so excited to make sure our kids had a safe place to play and grow. We all got involved in Hope For The Holidays, Shop With A Cop, Poker Nights, etc. You name it, Bill was always there, with a helping hand. He also became involved in Kiwanis. He hosted A Pasta Dinner Annually, to raise funds for both organizations. In addition to The Crime Watch, PAL and The Kiwanis, Bill also volunteered with the Future Foundation. The Future Foundation, was established to support arts and cultural activities for our children. This program was run by a group of volunteers, from the City and Local Businesses. We held fundraisers, two concerts and provided grants to our Schools and Non-Profit Organizations. It was a shame, that negative politics had started to cast unfound attacks, on the good works of this group. Bill’s work did not stop there. He was a fixture at The Hallandale Beach Food Pantry, run by Paul Snow. He would do food pick up deliveries weekly and at one time, the pantry was up to two hundred turkeys, a year. Bill was also a Friend of The Hallandale POPS. He helped raise funds and attended concerts when he could. He also worked on The Cancer Society, Jail and Bail and when we held it, The Relay for Life. He also was a proud member of The Italian American Club, as well. As a Veteran Of The US Air Force and son of a WWII Hero, Bill was truly committed to supporting our Veterans. He was Commander Of The American Legion Post, right here, in Hallandale Beach. During our Memorial Day Services, Bill took great pride in displaying our Local Veteran’s History. He created tributes to them, complete with plane pictures and other items. Our History, would not be the same, if it was not for Bill. He championed our Historical Commission and worked with one of the daughters, of our founding Curci Family, to ensure that the Curci House and Village, were preserved. Bill also brought forward, on behalf of The Community Civic Association, The Renaming Of 8th Avenue to: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. He also worked to expand the MLK Parade to Hallandale Beach Boulevard. We always walked, side by side, along the route. He also worked outside of the City. When Hurricane Katrina hit, he participated, in a relief trip. He helped another Florida City, that was in financial difficulty, with the donation, of a used fire truck, that we were going to dispose of. On a personal note, Bill was a Dear Friend. My children grew up knowing him and he shared many family events. My Dad and Mom, also enjoyed seeing Bill on their visits, in the winter. After his Dad’s death, Bill was a devoted son. He was always by his Mother's side. He cared for many of our old single woman friends. He was always driving, Former Mayor Dottie Ross and Vice Mayor, Fran Schiller to events and conferences. He had one surviving Cousin, Steve Padovano. Sadly, Steve’s wife, recently passed away. Over the recent years with his health failing, I know he was disappointed, that I did not encourage him to run again for office. With his poor health and the continued stresses, of his Diabetes, I truly did not think it was wise. I encouraged him to continue to Volunteer, enjoy his life, his cars and focus on what should have been his top priority, his health. The last time we spoke, he wanted to get better and start back at the track, doing early morning horse walking. Service, however was in his DNA and one of his last FB comments, was that, he was running for Office, again. As friends, we enjoyed the best of times and the worst of times. I believe that is what life is about. Hallandale Beach, caring for others and helping those in need, were Bills passion. He was a true public servant and Hallandale Beach, has lost one of its Heroes. As of the writing of this article, the goal is to have a double brick dedicated, in his honor at our Veterans Memorial located at City Hall. If all goes as planned, it will be on Wednesday, September 29th, 2021 around 5:00 p.m. Please follow my FB page for updates.
