- A Lifeline For Miami's Animal Community
A Lifeline For Miami's Animal Community December 13, 2023 Share In the vibrant heart of Miami-Dade County, an alliance between two formidable forces - The Humane Society of Greater Miami and the Friends of Miami Animals Foundation, Inc. (FoMA) - continues to pave the way for a brighter, more humane future for the city's four-legged residents. With an incredible $42,500 Grant from FoMA, a vital initiative has been launched to Spay and Neuter large Dogs, Puppies over four months old, and Community Cats, championing responsible pet ownership and curbing the plight of homeless animals in the area. The essence of this initiative lies in its generosity and inclusivity. It's not just about the provision of essential veterinary services; it's about breaking down barriers and making these services accessible to those who might otherwise struggle to afford them. For individuals currently receiving government assistance, the surgeries come at no cost, ensuring that financial constraints do not stand in the way of responsible pet care. It's a testament to compassion meeting practicality - an approach that benefits both the animals and the community they call home. Jossie Aguirre, the dedicated Executive Director at the Humane Society of Greater Miami, resonates deeply with the significance of this partnership. "Pet abandonment continues to be a huge concern at our shelter, especially for large Dogs," she reveals. "This worthwhile assistance from FoMA will help make Spay/Neuter Services more accessible to people around the community and prevent more unwanted litters from being born and left without a home." The impact of this Grant reaches far beyond the confines of the organizations involved. It resonates with every pet owner striving to do right by their furry companions, irrespective of financial limitations. It resonates with the very fabric of Miami-Dade County, striving for a future where no animal suffers due to preventable circumstances. For those seeking to benefit from these invaluable services, the path is straightforward. The Gardnar Mulloy Pet Rescue Clinic, nestled in the heart of North Miami Beach at 16101 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida 33160, serves as the beacon of hope. To avail themselves of the free or Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Surgeries, individuals are encouraged to reach out by dialing: (305) 749-1827. Alternatively, scheduling an appointment online streamlines the process, ensuring that responsible pet care is just a call or click away, through: www.humanesocietymiami.org Beyond the numbers and the financial support, this partnership symbolizes a shared vision. It's a vision of a community that rallies together, understanding that the welfare of its animals is a reflection of its own compassion and empathy. It's a vision that transcends boundaries, bringing together diverse backgrounds and circumstances under the shared umbrella of care for those who cannot speak for themselves. The impact of this grant is a ripple that touches lives, both seen and unseen. It's in the wag of a dog's tail as it finds a forever home. It's in the purr of a contented cat, now spared from the challenges of a feral existence. It's in the smiles of individuals who can now provide better care for their beloved pets, knowing that support exists within their community. As Miami-Dade County strides toward a future of responsible pet ownership and compassion for its animals, the partnership between FoMA and the Humane Society of Greater Miami stands as a beacon of hope. It's a reminder that when hearts unite for a cause greater than themselves, remarkable change becomes not just a possibility but an undeniable reality. In the symphony of progress and compassion, this grant serves as a poignant note, a promise for a better tomorrow for Miami's animals and its people alike. To take advantage of the Free and Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Services offered at the Humane Society of Greater Miami’s Gardnar Mulloy Pet Rescue Clinic, please call: (305) 749-1827. - Pure Joy: Celebrate The Most Joyous Date on The Jewish Calendar
Pure Joy: Celebrate The Most Joyous Date on The Jewish Calendar By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil March 9, 2023 Share Recently I had the honor of being the guest speaker at the MAR-JCC on the topic of Joy. Although I get to speak there quite often, this time the participants were especially engrossed in the topic, since Joy is something that we all want to experience. I welcomed all sorts of questions, as we together discovered the different levels of joy, and how to best bring them about. According to statistics, there are more people who suffer from some sort of depression than any other disease. While some treat this terrible mental illness with pills, the Talmud tells us that Joy breaks all barriers and that the more we fill ourselves with joy, the less time we think about ourselves, and the less we suffer. Helping others and keeping our mind focused on helping others is another way to fight depression. It’s mind boggling to see how huge of an epidemic it is, in this day and age, when we have more technology than ever, and better applications to help us be in touch with friends. Yet the suffering of a lack of real friends and friendship is as prevalent as ever. On Purim, when the holiday is really all about Joy, we deal with all of the above! The four special Mitzvas associated with Purim, are 1) Giving gifts of money to at least two poor people. 2) Sending food gifts, made up of at least two types of foods, to at least one friend. 3) Enjoying a festive Purim meal, preferably with friends. And 4) Recounting the story of the Purim miracle, by reading the Megilla, also known as the Scroll of Esther. When we take the focus off of ourselves, and instead see how we can help others, by giving charity and giving gifts of food. When our focus is shifted from celebrating in silence, to having a meal with others. When we remember the miracles that occurred, not just to our ancestors many years ago, but also to us, over and over again.. It really forces us to bring out our inner joy, and slowly transform it into a pure joy! The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year after sundown on Monday, March 6 and ends at nightfall on Tuesday, March 7. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman's plot "to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day." I encourage you to contact your local Chabad or synagogue to see what they’re doing to celebrate. You’re of course welcome to join us, free of charge, at our annual Purim Party! I invite you to join me in strapping on your flight attendant or pilot suit and brace yourself for liftoff at this year’s Purim celebration, dubbed “Purim - A First Class Experience on Hakhel Air”! It’s Chabad Chayil's creative twist to this year’s community celebration of Purim. The festivities will be held right behind the construction site at 2601 Northeast 211th Terrace, North Miami, Florida 33180 on Tuesday, March 7th, featuring live music, food and lots of fun. Every seven years is a Hakhel year. In ancient times, during a Hakhel year, Jews would stream to Jerusalem to unite in the Beit Hamkidash. For more information about the Hakhel year, please go to our website at: https://www.chabadchayil.org/generic_cdo/aid/742767/jewish/Hakhel.htm Currently celebrating a year of Hakhel, we chose the theme of traveling together to Israel, enjoying our Purim meal together on Hakhel Air. We’ll enjoy a delicious sit-down dinner (not airplane food), exciting in-flight entertainment and a duty-free bar. Megillah will take place in the ‘lounge’ as we’ll be of course traveling first class! Billed as the most joyous date on the Jewish calendar, the daylong holiday commemorates the nullification in 356 B.C.E. of a Persian decree calling for the extermination of the Jewish people throughout the Persian Empire as told in the biblical Book of Esther. Chabad’s original spin on this age-old holiday has helped bring the spirit of Purim to the area year after year. The event is a community-wide program, and all are welcome to join, regardless of affiliation or background. Children and adults will enjoy great Israeli foods, a live rock band & plenty of other ‘in-flight’ entertainment. There is no charge for anyone to join, though donations always help us bring quality programs to the community. For party details, Megillah reading times or to learn more about the holiday & the complete Purim story, or to help sponsor food for poor either locally or in Israel, call: (305) 770-1919. Or visit: https://www.chabadchayil.org/templates/articlecco_cdo/aid/4304732/jewish/Purim.htm About The Author Rabbi Kievman together with his wife are the ambassadors of The Rebbe to Highland Lakes, FL. They are the founders of Gan Chabad Preschool, your local CTeen & CKids chapters, CHAP - an afterschool program for Jewish children in Public Schools and direct Chabad Chayil. - Safeguarding Sunshine: Florida's New Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit Strikes Back Against Online Crime
Safeguarding Sunshine: Florida's New Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit Strikes Back Against Online Crime August 24, 2023 Share In today's fast-paced digital age, the Internet has become an integral part of our lives. However, as our reliance on Technology grows, so does the threat of Cyber Crime. In a bid to protect its citizens from the perils of Illicit Online activities, Florida's Attorney General, Ashley Moody, took a bold step by announcing the establishment of the Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit. This new team of expert attorneys, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), aims to combat Cyber Crime and fill the Enforcement Gap left by Federal Authorities focusing on High-Dollar Cases. The need for such a specialized unit is undeniable. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center, a staggering number of 42,000 Floridians fell victim to Cyber Crime in the previous year, resulting in a combined loss of over $844 Million. This alarming surge in Online Criminal Activity demands immediate attention and proactive measures. Attorney General Ashley Moody recognized the Enforcement Gap created by Federal Agencies concentrating their efforts on Cases with MultiMillion-Dollar Losses, which often leaves smaller yet equally damaging Cyber Crimes overlooked. To address this, Moody collaborated with Legislative Leaders and Law Enforcement Partners to assemble a team capable of handling these emerging High-Tech Schemes and protecting the State's Residents from Cyber Threats. The Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit is a Strategic Partnership between the Florida Attorney General's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. This Alliance brings together Criminal and Civil Attorneys, along with FDLE Analysts and other Law Enforcement Agencies, to pool resources and expertise in solving Cyber Crimes. FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass commends the unit's efforts, emphasizing the vital role analysts play in researching Cyber Crime and Criminal Organizations. By identifying the perpetrators and understanding the modus operandi behind these crimes, the team becomes a crucial resource not only for the FDLE but for all of their Law Enforcement Partners. A Force to Be Reckoned With Since its inception, the Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit has already made significant strides in tackling Cyber Crime across the State. Recently, in collaboration with the FDLE, they managed to shut down a complex criminal enterprise that employed the Dark Web and Cryptocurrency to conduct Massive Identity Theft and Money Laundering, totaling over $350,000. The ringleader involved in this Case is now potentially facing a staggering 135-year prison sentence if convicted. Additionally, the unit has successfully handled other Cyber Crime Cases, showcasing its efficacy in dealing with various Cyber Threats. For instance, Kevin Anderson, who perpetrated Credit Card Fraud amounting to more than $150,000, has been sentenced to over five years in prison. Similarly, individuals like Cathy Green, Cynthia Sirmans, and Maninder Singh Bawa, responsible for crimes ranging from Fraudulent Overtime Payouts to Elder Exploitation, have also faced the consequences of their actions in the eyes of the Law. Staying Protected In The Digital Era As Cyber Crime continues to evolve, it's essential for individuals to take steps to protect themselves from falling victim to online scams. The Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit advises victims of Cyber Crime to take immediate action by securing their devices with new passwords, preserving evidence through screenshots, and reporting the Crime to FDLE's Computer Crime Center. If Unauthorized Access to Financial Accounts is involved, Victims should promptly notify their Bank and Credit Card Company, while also monitoring accounts for any signs of Identity Theft. Taking the added precaution of Freezing Credit can also Mitigate Potential Damage from Identity Theft. Visit One Of These Three Credit Bureaus To Initiate A Credit Freeze: Equifax - www.equifax.com Experian - www.experian.com TransUnion - www.transunion.com While the Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit works tirelessly to combat Cyber Crime, prevention remains the most effective strategy. - The New Abnormal: Authoritarian Control Freaks Want To Micromanage Our Lives
The New Abnormal: Authoritarian Control Freaks Want To Micromanage Our Lives By John & Nisha Whitehead October 5, 2023 Share Authoritarian control freaks out to micromanage our lives has become the new normal or, to be more accurate, the new abnormal when it comes to how the government relates to the citizenry. This overbearing despotism, which pre-dates the COVID-19 hysteria, is the very definition of a Nanny State, where government representatives (those elected and appointed to work for us) adopt the authoritarian notion that the government knows best and therefore must control, regulate and dictate almost everything about the citizenry’s public, private and professional lives. Indeed, it’s a dangerous time for anyone who still clings to the idea that freedom means the right to think for yourself and act responsibly according to your best judgment. This tug-of-war for control and sovereignty over our selves impacts almost every aspect of our lives, whether you’re talking about decisions relating to our health, our homes, how we raise our children, what we consume, what we drive, what we wear, how we spend our money, how we protect ourselves and our loved ones, and even who we associate with and what we think. You can’t even buy a stove, a dishwasher, a showerhead, a leaf blower, or a lightbulb anymore without running afoul of the Nanny State. In this way, under the guise of pseudo-benevolence, the government has meted out this bureaucratic tyranny in such a way as to nullify the inalienable rights of the individual and limit our choices to those few that the government deems safe enough. Yet limited choice is no choice at all. Likewise, regulated freedom is no freedom at all. Indeed, as a study by the Cato Institute concludes, for the average American, freedom has declined generally over the past 20 years. The overt signs of the despotism exercised by the increasingly authoritarian regime that passes itself off as the United States government (and its corporate partners in crime) are all around us. Yet as egregious as these incursions on our rights may be, it’s the endless, petty tyrannies that illustrate so clearly the degree to which “we the people” are viewed as incapable of common sense, moral judgment, fairness, and intelligence, not to mention lacking a basic understanding of how to stay alive, raise a family, or be part of a functioning community. When the dictates of petty bureaucrats carry greater weight than the individual rights of the citizenry, we’re in trouble, folks. Federal and State Governments have used the law as a bludgeon to litigate, legislate and micromanage our lives through overregulation and overcriminalization. Overregulation is just the other side of the coin to overcriminalization, that phenomenon in which everything is rendered illegal, and everyone becomes a lawbreaker. Yet while there are endless ways for the Nanny State to micromanage our lives, things become truly ominous when the government adopts mechanisms enabling it to monitor us for violations in order to enforce its many laws. Nanny State, meet the all-seeing, all-knowing Surveillance State and its sidekick, the muscle-flexing Police State. You see, in an age of overcriminalization—when the law is wielded like a hammer to force compliance to the government’s dictates, whatever they might be—you don’t have to do anything “wrong” to be fined, arrested or subjected to raids and seizures and surveillance. You just have to refuse to march in lockstep with the government. This is the Police State’s superpower: empowered by the Nanny State, it has been vested with the authority to make our lives a bureaucratic hell. Indeed, if you were unnerved by the rapid deterioration of privacy under the Surveillance State, prepare to be terrified by the surveillance matrix that will be ushered in by the Nanny State working in tandem with the Police State. The groundwork laid with COVID-19 is a prologue to what will become the Police State’s conquest of a new, relatively uncharted, frontier: inner space, specifically, the inner workings (genetic, biological, biometric, mental, emotional) of the human race. Consider how many more ways the government could “protect us” from ourselves under the guise of public health and safety. For instance, under the guise of public health and safety, the government could use Mental Health Care as a pretext for targeting and locking up dissidents, activists and anyone unfortunate enough to be placed on a government watch list. When combined with advances in mass surveillance technologies, artificial intelligence-powered programs that can track people by their biometrics and behavior, Mental Health sensor data (tracked by wearable data and monitored by government agencies such as HARPA), threat assessments, behavioral sensing warnings, precrime initiatives, red flag gun laws, and Mental Health First-Aid programs aimed at training gatekeepers to identify who might pose a threat to public safety, these preemptive Mental Health Programs could well signal a tipping point in the government’s efforts to penalize those engaging in so-called “thought crimes.” This is how it begins. On a daily basis, Americans are already relinquishing the most intimate details of who we are in order to navigate an increasingly technologically-enabled world. Having conditioned the population to the idea that being part of society is a privilege and not a right, such access could easily be predicated on Social Credit Scores, the worthiness of one’s political views, or the extent to which one is willing to comply with the government’s dictates, no matter what they might be. We should all be leery and afraid. All the government needs is proof of your law-breaking. They’ll get it, too. Whether it’s through the use of surveillance software such as ShadowDragon that allows Police to watch people’s Social Media activity, or technology that uses a home’s WiFi router and smart appliances to allow those on the outside to “see” throughout your home, it’s just a matter of time. At a time when the government has a growing list—shared with fusion centers and Law Enforcement Agencies—of ideologies, behaviors, affiliations and other characteristics that could flag someone as suspicious and result in their being labeled potential enemies of the state, it won’t take much for any of us to be considered outlaws or terrorists. In an age of overcriminalization, you’re already a criminal. After all, the government likes to use the words “anti-government,” “extremist” and “terrorist” interchangeably. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, at some point, being an individualist will be considered as dangerous as being a terrorist. - We All Need To Unite Against This Hate
We All Need To Unite Against This Hate By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper May 27, 2021 Share On May 23rd, 2021 a group of Hallandale & Beaches Patriots members along with Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper & Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub joined to rally with Israelis, Jews and Christians from all over to cheer, dance, pray and hear Passionate speakers. This is sad, that we as Jewish people, are still fighting Anti-Semitism in America, it was wonderful to see so many people join in supporting those in Harm’s way. Make no mistake, Hammas is a terrorist organiza-tion. They have continued to vow to wipe Israel off of the map. I, personally have witnessed the impact of war on the peaceful communities in Israel, when I visited after the last attacks. Imagine walking down your street and your neighbor’s home, is in rubble or having to seek shelter when air raid horns sound? Israel, is the only democratic country in the Middle East. The history of this region cannot be rewritten to suit one nation or country. As a note, when I went with the US Conference of Mayors to Saudi Arabia, the Museum did not even have Israel on their version of the world map. Many that I spoke with, supported a two-state solution, but certainly, are not vocal about their positions. At the rally, I had the chance to speak with an older gentleman about the history of the region. History is so important to understand, the centuries of oppression. He summed it up in an email to me. The major point, being that there was never a Palestinian State. "Before Israel, there was a British mandate, not a Palestinian state. Before the British Mandate, there was the Ottoman Empire, not a Palestinian state. Before the Ottoman Empire, there was the Islamic state of the Mamluks of Egypt, not a Palestinian state. Before the Islamic state of the Mamluks of Egypt, there was the Ayubid Arab-Kurdish Empire, not a Palestinian state. Godfrey IV of Boulogne, known as Godfrey de Bouillon, conqueror of Jerusalem in 1099, before the Ayubid Empire, there was the Frankish and Christian Kingdom of Jerusalem, not a Palestinian state. Before the Kingdom of Jerusalem, there was the Umayyad and Fatimid empires, not a Palestinian state. Before the Umayyad and Fatimid empires, there was the Byzantine Empire, not a Palestinian state. Before the Byzantine Empire, there were the Sassanids, not a Palestinian state. Before the Sassanid Empire, there was the Byzantine Empire, not a Palestinian state. Before the Byzantine Empire, there was the Roman Empire, not a Palestinian state. Before the Roman Empire, there was the Hasmonean state, not a Palestinian state. Before the Hasmonean state, there was the Seleucid, not a Palestinian state. Before the Seleucid Empire, there was the Empire of Alexander the Great, not a Palestinian state. Before the Empire of Alexander the Great, there was the Persian Empire, not a Palestinian state. Before the Persian Empire, there was the Babylonian Empire, not a Palestinian state. Before the Babylonian Empire, there were the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, not a Palestinian state. Before the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, there was the Kingdom of Israel, not a Palestinian state. Before the Kingdom of Israel, there was the theocracy of the twelve tribes of Israel, not a Palestinian state. Before the theocracy of the twelve tribes of Israel, there was an agglomeration of independent Canaanite City-Kingdoms, not a Palestinian state. The Jewish finally have a home, they have the right to defend it and over, the past years, they have also had to defend themselves. Now we are having to defend ourselves, here. WE ALL need to unite against this hate. In my opinion, these terrorist groups which include far right Hammas, White Supremacists, KKK, Skin Heads, Neo-Nazi, Proud Boys, sadly, the far left Antifa and BLM Movements, which have been hijacked by extremists and are simply groups fueled by feeding lies to individuals, that are disenfranchised. The combination of the former President, not standing strong against these hate groups and economic unrests have added fuel to this fire, that needs to be put out, now. Social media and the cowardly trolls, hiding behind their computers, spewing out, lie after lie, need to be called out and stopped. I also saw this, on my visit to the Middle East for Government and Leadership matters regarding Israel and the commitment to education and matters of economic success. The stark contrast to Israeli cities to others, across the border, are real. In Saudi Arabia, the King has set into place an economic development plan to build their county. Investments in educational and Economic Centers are making a difference in the lives of their constituents. These countries need to focus on investing in their people, not guns and missiles to annihilate Israel.
