  • FPL Meteorologists Prepare for Potentially Active Hurricane Season

FPL Meteorologists Prepare for Potentially Active Hurricane Season June 6, 2024 Share Growing up in Indiana and then living in Oklahoma -- the heart of tornado alley -- for 15 years, Chris Kerr witnessed just how quickly skies can turn from calm to chaos. He can vividly recall the roaring winds that came with each deadly storm, especially the last EF5 (strongest classification of tornadoes) on record in the U.S. that affected his friends and coworkers in May 2013, but barely missed his home. These memories, etched into his soul, fuel his dedication as a meteorologist today at Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). From afternoon thunderstorms to named hurricanes, he forecasts weather conditions to help restoration crews get the lights back on safely and quickly for customers by informing them of any threats or challenges they may face, like lightning, high winds, storm surge or flooding. “I like being able to see the results from the forecasts and being able to make a difference,” said Kerr while looking through weather tracking models on his various computer screens. The graphics software he and his colleague, Tim Drum, use is just like what the Weather Channel and other media entities use to present graphical weather forecasts. This accurate and timely weather forecasting is crucial, especially as experts predict a well-above-average 2024 hurricane season beginning June 1. Researchers at Colorado State University are forecasting 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes and five major hurricanes. “All the data coming in so far shows this season could possibly be one to challenge some of the records set in recent years,” said Kerr. “Record-high water temperatures out in the Atlantic Ocean and an anticipated La Niña are two factors that are favorable for hurricane development.” La Niña is the periodic cooling of the waters of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean; and it typically allows for above average tropical cyclone development in the North Atlantic Ocean because of increased thunderstorms and reduced wind shear. Tropical cyclones become stronger when they pass over warm water and areas of low wind shear. By July or August, weather models show La Niña will likely develop and become moderate to strong around the peak of the hurricane season (September to October). FPL tests readiness with simulated storm Regardless of conditions, FPL is better prepared for hurricanes than at any time in the company’s history through its year-round improvements to make the energy grid smarter, stronger and more storm resilient. These investments, including the deployment of smart grid devices and installation of underground power lines, benefit customers by reducing outage times and restoration costs associated with severe weather events. FPL also prepares for hurricane season by stress-testing employees with a week-long, simulated hurricane response, typically in the early days of May just as the start of hurricane season comes into view. While the storm is fictitious, FPL’s response is not. The training scenario feels every bit as real, in part, because of detailed weather forecasts and simulated impacts to the state. “I put together mock scripts and simulated weather shows from our studio to imitate a real-world situation. We take lessons learned from these drills and previous storms to continue improving our response,” said Kerr. His realistic weather updates are relayed to Distribution Operations Manager Casey Sheffield, who oversees the deployment of resources (crews, trucks, and equipment) during day-to-day operations. “During a real storm, the command center team can pre-stage thousands of resources while allowing crews to continue working until Kerr informs us of unsafe weather conditions,” said Sheffield. “At the end of the day, the goal is to always cut down on restoration times for our customers." The drill is a comprehensive test of FPL's storm response capabilities. It involves most departments within the company, such as customer service and communications, ensuring that everyone is aligned and ready to act quickly and safely in the event of a real storm. "Being part of this drill reminds me of the responsibility we have to our customers. We want them to be prepared for anything mother nature may bring this hurricane season, just as we are,” said Kerr. FPL urges customers to be aware of potential safety hazards, especially before, during and after severe weather. • What's In My Bag? An Expert Dermatologist's On-The-Go Essentials | sun-times

What's In My Bag? An Expert Dermatologist's On-The-Go Essentials BPT Jul 24, 2025 When You're Constantly Juggling Work, School, And Home Responsibilities, It's Easy To Overlook Your Own Well-Being. But Neglecting Self-Care Can Quickly Lead To Burnout, Ultimately Throwing Your Entire Routine Off Track. Dr. Gabriela Soza, Manhattan Board-Certified Dermatologist and mother of two young children, knows firsthand how challenging self-care can be when you're on-the-go. That's why she recommends preparing a bag to carry all your essentials while you're out and about. But, what counts as an essential item? While those exact items may vary from person to person, Soza offers an easy organizational system. "When organizing my must-haves, I tend to break them down into three core categories: health, wellness and skincare to freshen up throughout the day," she said. "Once you've curated your items, use a removable bag insert or pouch to store them. That way, whether you choose a tote bag, backpack or large purse, you can easily transfer your essentials from bag to bag." Read on to learn about Soza's personal "must-have" recommendations. 1. Health Hand sanitizer: As a healthcare professional, Dr. Soza knows firsthand about the importance of hand hygiene. That's why she emphasizes the importance of keeping hand sanitizer to reduce the risk of getting sick or spreading germs. Soza recommends finding sanitizers that also moisturize your skin to prevent your hands from drying out, like Touchland's Hydrating Hand Sanitizer. Water bottle: Hydration is the key to good health, including healthy skin. To prevent dehydration and ensure you have access to water all day, Soza suggests carrying a water bottle in your bag. Pick out a water bottle that has a secure top so you can throw it into your bag without worrying that it will spill over. Fill it up before you leave the house and refill it as needed. 2. Skincare SPF: Whether you have an extensive or bare-bones skincare routine, SPF products should always be on your essentials list. Even if you put on sunscreen before leaving the house, you'll need to reapply throughout the day. Dr. Soza's personal pick is Neocutis Réactive+. This antioxidant serum offers broad spectrum SPF 45 to protect against skin-aging free radicals and harmful sun damage that causes premature skin aging. "For over a decade, I've been continuously impressed by the consistent efficacy of Neocutis products," said Soza. "As a dermatologist who constantly evaluates skincare for both myself and my patients, I appreciate that Neocutis products, such as Réactive+, are research-backed and actively support the skin's collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, all while protecting the skin from free-radicals and harmful sun damage." Eye cream: The delicate skin under your eyes can have trouble retaining moisture. To keep your under-eyes hydrated throughout the day and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, make sure to include an eye cream in your essentials. Choose a hydrating and brightening cream like Neocutis Lumiére® Firm as a midday pick-me-up. Its advanced aging formulation moisturizes delicate skin while also improving firmness, elasticity and texture. Lumiére® Firm is also designed to reduce puffiness, making it the perfect solution for moms on-the-go who need a quick and effective refresh. Facial mist: During a hot day, it's hard to keep your makeup looking good while beating the heat. That's why it's a smart idea to keep a facial mist on hand to freshen up! Soza suggests finding a mist with skincare benefits that can be applied throughout the day like Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray. With just a few spritzes your skin will be soothed, letting you look and feel your best from morning to evening. Lip balm: Lip balm isn't just for hydrating your lips. Of course, its main purpose is to keep your lips moisturized and protected, but it's an incredibly versatile weapon in your on-the-go arsenal. Soza's "do-it-all" lip balm is Aquaphor as it can also tame flyaways, hydrate dry cuticles, and quickly fix a dry skin patch. 3. Wellness Headphones: Physical health items aren't the only essentials you need to pack. Dr. Soza advises keeping a pair of headphones in your bag to give yourself a private escape. It's a great way to center yourself with music, podcasts or audiobooks, even in public places. For example, she listens to music to relax when she's commuting or in between patients. Immunity stick packs: If you haven't used immunity stick packs before, it's time to start! As a new mom, Dr. Soza knows how important it is for moms to bolster their immune system, especially if they have small children. She advises searching for your favorite flavored, pre-portioned stick packs that have vitamin C, electrolytes, zinc and antioxidants to help ward off colds year-round. What's in your bag? No matter how busy your day is, you can give yourself the tools you need to support your health, wellness and skin. Using Soza's essential recommendations, you can ensure you always have what you need to take care of yourself, even during your busiest seasons. Sponsored by Merz Aesthetics. • Most Americans With OCD Never Receive Effective Treatment - Analysis By The International OCD Foundation Highlights Widespread Gaps In Diagnosis And Care | sun-times

Most Americans With OCD Never Receive Effective Treatment - Analysis By The International OCD Foundation Highlights Widespread Gaps In Diagnosis And Care South Florida Sun Times Jan 1, 2026 A Study Released Today By The International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) Finds That Millions Of Americans Living With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Are Not Receiving Care That Could Help Them Reclaim Their Lives. Up to 10 million Americans live with OCD, yet only one in six receive a correct diagnosis. As a result, 95% of people in the U.S. with OCD do not receive the most effective treatment, despite strong evidence that specialized therapy can significantly reduce symptoms and restore daily functioning. "Without effective care, people with OCD are left living with distress and limitations that don't have to define their lives," said Rebecca Deusser, Executive Director of the International OCD Foundation. "Treatments exist that help many people with OCD live productive, fulfilling lives, yet millions are suffering needlessly." OCD is a common and serious Mental Health condition marked by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can disrupt work, school, relationships, and everyday routines. Symptoms may involve fears related to contamination, safety, morality, religion, sexuality, or harm. Without appropriate treatment, OCD can severely diminish quality of life - yet many people struggle for years without answers or support. The findings come from the largest analysis of OCD diagnosis and treatment patterns ever conducted, reviewing 10 years of electronic health records from 10.4 million patients across all 50 states. The research found that people affected by OCD are being failed at nearly every step - from recognition and diagnosis to referrals and access to treatment. Only a small fraction of diagnosed patients received Exposure And Response Prevention (ERP), the evidence-based therapy shown to be most effective for treating OCD. In response to the findings, the IOCDF is urging broad, system-level action to close the gap between what is known to work and what patients actually receive. Priorities include: • Implementing routine screening for OCD in all clinical and Mental Health settings • Expanding clinician training so more providers are prepared to accurately diagnose OCD and provide evidence-based treatment • Strengthening adherence to professional care guidelines • Raising public awareness that OCD is both serious and treatable This research was conducted in collaboration with Guardian Research Network (GRN) and Resonance. The full white paper, America's OCD Care Crisis: National Findings on the Failure of Effective OCD Treatment to Reach Patients, is available at: www.iocdf.org/ocdcarecrisis . About the International OCD Foundation: The IOCDF is the leading authority on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related disorders including Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and Hoarding Disorder. The largest 501(c)3 NonProfit Organization in this space, we are dedicated to serving a broad community of individuals around the world along with their family members, loved ones, Mental Health professionals, and researchers. Up to 10 million Americans live with OCD, yet only one in six receive a correct diagnosis. Previous Next

  • Celebrating A New Season | sun-times

Celebrating A New Season By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Nov 26, 2025 As We Kick Off The Holiday Season It Is Great To See Many Of Our Friends Back In Hallandale Beach And The Surrounding Area. We Know That Many Of Our Businesses, Old And New, Have Been Looking Forward To The Winter Season. We encourage our residents to check out the many restaurants and entertainment venues. In the North area of our city we had many new restaurants open in Atlantic Village. Roasters N’ Toasters has opened in the old Mo’s Deli location. Further east along the Dixie corridor District 8 also has new additions that also include art studios, karate, new coffee spots with more to come. During construction, we have set up free parking along with a shuttle. Just last week, I attended a ribbon cutting by our very own Hallandale Beach Chamber for a brand new restaurant on Foster Road. We have not had a new restaurant open in the neighborhood for quite a long time. Poochellos Savory Soul Restaurant located at 889 Foster Road. The owner and his fiance have chosen Hallandale Beach as their new home. With dishes named like Hallandale High Sweet Ham and Carver Ranches Get Down the restaurant beacons back to the owner’s High School days and a homage to a new chapter in their lives with a vision to the future of Foster Road. In addition, their ribs and Mac and Cheese are amazing. During our last commission meeting Commissioner Butler brought up our Uber partnership. For our readers that are unaware we have a program that provides a free 10 dollar Voucher for any ride originating in Hallandale Beach to our local Hallandale Beach business. Many cities offer Freebee. We did a pilot for a few months but there were not many takers. This made the cost per trip too high. We ended up doing the program which has been somewhat successful. We have agreed to have staff continue the program but have expanded it for trips outside of the city that is coming to one of our businesses. Patrons that want to leave the driving to us can sign up on our website for the voucher. Dr. Earle also added that we will be going out again for an RFP for more micro transit options. We are also looking to reinstate a Bike Share program. Dr. Shen, our Director of the Transportation & Mobility Department has been researching the contract that Aventura just entered into but we felt it was too expensive per ride. I suggested we look to possibly do a pilot program with Hollywood and Dania along A1A. With the amount of condominiums, the cost per ride could be spread out making it a more viable program. I wanted to thank our Staff at the Hepburn Center for the Annual Thanksgiving lunch on November 26th for our seniors and other community members. A special mention goes out to Fenstersheib Law Group for their continued support to those in need. They hosted a turkey giveaway at Lanier James alongside our Police Athletic League (PAL) of Hallandale Beach and South Broward Ministerial Alliance. The Ahmidiyya Muslim Community of our Bait-un-Naseer Mosque also gave out free turkeys. Giving many of our residents even more to be thankful for. PAL is hosting the Annual Shop with a COP. They are always looking for donations to help the children in our city. Visit them on Facebook at Hallande Beach PAL. Hope for the Holidays is always a great way to help those in need. On Wednesday, December 10th, I will be hosting alongside Smatt’s Tennis, a Round Robin Tournament and Bagel brunch. Admission is a minimum donation of $30 dollars and an unwrapped toy. You can sign up at Golden Isles Tennis Center or reach out to me. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org .
