- First Responders Medical Care: A Beacon of Support for Florida's Heroes
First Responders Medical Care: A Beacon of Support for Florida's Heroes By Austin Torres November 10, 2023 Share Every day, our first responders put their lives on the line for our communities. These brave souls ensure our safety, bring solace in times of crisis, and symbolize the backbone of society. Recognizing their unyielding service and the unique challenges they face; First Responders Medical Care has stepped up with unparalleled commitment and reverence. Taking immense pride in their offerings, First Responders Medical presents Comprehensive Annual Diagnostic Examinations uniquely tailored for our heroes. This esteemed organization opens its arms to both current and retired Police Officers, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Responders, Educators, Nurses, and all other dedicated professionals from the State of Florida. At the heart of their service is a selection of comprehensive health assessments designed to address the specific health risks associated with the demanding nature of first responder roles. Each assessment and test are conducted with precision and care, ensuring that our frontline heroes receive the best possible health evaluations. The Stress Test and Echocardiogram are cornerstones of the Cardiovascular assessment, evaluating how the heart performs under physical strain and providing detailed images of its structure and function. This is essential for individuals who frequently encounter stressful situations. Complementing this is the Vascular Ultrasound, a critical tool for examining the blood flow in both arteries and veins, ensuring that any circulatory issues are identified and addressed promptly. Lung health is another priority, given the environmental hazards many first responders face. The Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) measures lung capacity and airflow, identifying any potential issues early on. In addition, Urinalysis is a simple yet effective test that can reveal a host of conditions, from infections to Kidney issues, ensuring that any health concerns are addressed before they escalate. Furthermore, the ABI Test and Electrocardiogram (ECG) provide a comprehensive overview of Cardiovascular health, assessing blood flow in the legs and monitoring the heart's electrical activity. Together, they paint a detailed picture of Cardiovascular health, crucial for those in high-stress roles. Rounding out the health assessments are Chest X-Rays and a Complete Blood Panel, which provide valuable information about the lungs, heart, chest structure, and various blood parameters, helping to identify a range of potential health issues. Marking a significant milestone, First Responders Medical Care celebrated its Inauguration Day on October 19th, 2023, with grandeur. Beyond merely opening their doors, the day symbolized the profound connection between the clinic and the community it aims to serve. The venue was brimming with warmth and camaraderie. There was an air of celebration combined with profound respect for the profession. Guests were treated to delectable food and refreshing drinks, embodying the hospitality and gratitude of First Responders Medical. The invite to local Chief Officers of police departments echoed the unity, shared goals, and collective community spirit. The Save A Life Program stands as a testament to their commitment, extending beyond the first responders to educators, city/state employees, and their families. With alarming statistics like Cardiopulmonary Disease being a predominant threat for high-stress occupations, this program stands as a protective shield, aiming to catch complications or non-symptomatic diseases before they escalate. Project Coordinator Arlet Soto encapsulates the spirit of the organization: “We take immense pride in contributing to our community. Every time we showcase our services, it brings us great joy to give back and make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve” said Soto. "Established just two years ago, our rapid growth has been nothing short of extraordinary," Soto enthusiastically shares. "During our inauguration, we witnessed the tremendous enthusiasm for our brand, with the clinic receiving an overwhelming response of 200 pre-registrations within the first month, reflecting the strong interest people have in our services." Their mission is a testament to their dedication: Deliver unparalleled medical care, laser-focused on the needs of those who risk their lives daily for our communities. Collaborating with the ONYX MEDICAL GROUP and professionals like Arlet Soto, Juan Rosales, Wajiha Jamal, Ken Synvirt, Alfin Jeyaseelan and Rameses Ramirez they ensure top-notch Cardiovascular testing is accessible to all community saviors. By emphasizing preventative measures and early detection, First Responders Medical aims to enhance the overall health and longevity of our first responders and public workers, and empower them to continue their invaluable service to our society. The safety and wellbeing of these heroes are top priorities for the team at First Responders Medical and they are honored to offer support all the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to serving our communities across the great State of Florida. If you are a public worker, we strongly encourage you to reach out and get in touch with one of their representatives to learn more about their program and how you can benefit from their $0-Copay Cardiopulmonary and fitness exam. Their mission is a testament to their dedication: Deliver unparalleled medical care, laser-focused on the needs of those who risk their lives daily for our communities. - Come Celebrate! South Florida Jubilee Chorus' Performs Its First Live Performance in 30 Months
Come Celebrate! South Florida Jubilee Chorus' Performs Its First Live Performance in 30 Months July 21, 2022 Share After a hiatus of more than 30 months, Broward County's only all women's a cappella chorus, South Florida Jubilee Chorus, will be back on stage on Saturday, July 30 at 2 pm in Fort Lauderdale. (United Church of Christ 2501 NE 30th St, Fort Lauderdale) This performance: "Come Celebrate!" is the chorus' 2021 Holiday and 25th Anniversary show…Christmas in July. The original show date was postponed due to the surge of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 last December. It's been a long journey from 47 members in March 2020 to our current 26. The chorus continued rehearsing during the pandemic holding weekly rehearsals on Zoom, with occasional outdoor rehearsals and produced a virtual show last July. Last August, the ladies returned to in-person rehearsals, rehearsing masked and socially distanced. Under the direction of James Kastler, the ladies worked tirelessly to get their show ready for the December show date but, in an abundance of caution, decided to postpone it. "We are thrilled to finally be able to hold our Holiday/25th Anniversary show and are excited to welcome many of our chorus alumni who have been invited to the celebratory production," said Laurie Hunt, founding member and last year's president of South Florida Jubilee. "The show will include a video projection of photos and performances from the past 25 years that will bring smiles and tears to the audience." This show is made possible in part by a grant received from the Broward County Cultural Division. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under and are available to purchase online at https://tickets.chorusconnection.com/sfj/events/459 - A limited number of tickets may be available on the day of the performance. South Florida Jubilee Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide women's organization focused on advancing the art of barbershop harmony. SAI provides opportunities to enjoy this a cappella style through performance, competition, and education. The chapter began 25 years ago in Hollywood. South Florida Jubilee's singers enrich their lives through the enjoyment of singing a broad variety of songs from Broadway, classical, pop, and gospel music. They perform throughout Broward County in quartets, ensembles, and full chorus all year long. Sweet Adelines International Founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1945, Sweet Adelines started as a small group of women who loved to sing. Since then, it has evolved into an organization that spans the globe connecting nearly 21,000 singers around the world in song. They’re dedicated to preserving the unique sound of a cappella barbershop harmony, sharing our passion for music and empowering our community in every area of their lives. - Getting Dizzy: With Magic & Mayhem Live
Getting Dizzy: With Magic & Mayhem Live August 15, 2023 Share Do you believe that it’s possible to actually die laughing? If so, Dizzy might be the most dangerous man alive. From the celebrated Apollo Theatre in London’s West End to the iconic Sydney Opera House, Darren “Dizzy” Partridge has been delighting audiences around the globe for more than a decade. An accomplished comedy magician and cirque variety performer, Dizzy is a regular headlining act on the luxury liners of both Celebrity and Norwegian cruise lines. He has also been featured as The Trickster in the largest touring magic show in the world, The Illusionists. Dizzy’s wild combination of magic, physical comedy, and theatrical thievery, delivered with mischievous British charm, leaves his audiences both spellbound and gasping for breath. With three different shows to choose from, you are guaranteed an experience they will not believe and will never forget. As a kid growing up in Coventry, England, he had no idea that one day, he would be performing in cirque shows around the world and making a living with magic. Dizzy told us, "I am sometimes asked if I always wanted to be a magician and to be honest, the short answer is no – but I always followed my interests. I started out in martial arts; I just loved the physicality and athleticism it required. My favorite moves were the ones that involved spinning and kicking and jumping, and those movements would soon morph into a love of breakdancing. I taught myself all the power moves, and even though I didn’t have an ounce of rhythm, I loved doing all of the acrobatic tricks. Believe it or not, those tricks landed me a gig as Sir Francis Drake in a stunt show in Majorca, Spain." During this time Dizzy spent several seasons doing backflips and high falls and sword fights with my fellow swashbucklers. When his tenure as a professional pirate eventually came to an end (actually due to a fight with Blackbeard; that’s a whole other story), he wandered into a cirque audition back in London and blew away the casting directors with everything he had learned. As the other applicants were fussing about which music they wanted, he ran up the wall, did a backflip, and when he landed, he had everyone’s attention. As it turns out, in some careers, bouncing off the walls is a good thing. He was hired and moved to Myrtle Beach to work for Le Grand Cirque and was exposed to a myriad of different performers, including some influential magicians (who would eventually become his teachers), and everything just clicked into place. One of those influential magicians was Janna Roukhmanova – she is a world-renowned, multi-discipline cirque performer originally from Moscow, Russia. She also happens to be his wife! Together they are committed to bringing world-class entertainment to as many people as they can. The Aventura Show Magic & Mayhem Live is an extravaganza of magic and laughter that promises to leave audiences mesmerized and roaring with laughter. This one-of-a-kind show brings mind-bending illusions to death-defying acrobatics, the show is a rollercoaster ride of emotions that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Darren “Dizzy” Partridge, with his mischievous British charm, is the heart and soul of the production. His seamless fusion of magic and physical comedy has earned him a reputation as one of the most entertaining magicians in the business. Watching Dizzy perform is like witnessing a whirlwind of laughter and amazement. He has the uncanny ability to make the impossible seem possible and the possible seem hilariously absurd. Magic & Mayhem Live is not just a magic show; it's a theatrical experience that takes the audience on a journey through the realms of fantasy and wonder. One of the highlights of the show is the mischievous duo of Dizzy and Janna Roukhmanova, whose chemistry and onstage camaraderie are simply electric. Janna's background in cirque performance adds an extra layer of excitement to the magic acts, as she gracefully weaves through the air with her aerial acrobatics, leaving the audience in awe. As the lights dim and the curtain rises, the audience is transported into a world of magic, mayhem, and mystery. The grand stage comes alive with dazzling lights, intricate sets, and heart-pounding music that sets the tone for the jaw-dropping performances to come. But it's not just the individual acts that make this show so special; it's the seamless integration of each act into a cohesive and immersive experience. The transitions between performances are smooth, with each act building upon the excitement of the last. The show's pacing is expertly crafted, ensuring that there's never a dull moment. One of the most thrilling segments of the show is when the audience becomes a part of the magic. Volunteers are invited on stage to participate in mind-reading acts and daring escapology tricks. The audience's reactions range from nervous laughter to stunned silence as they witness the seemingly impossible happen right before their eyes. Magic & Mayhem Live is not just for magic enthusiasts; it's for anyone who appreciates the art of entertainment. The show appeals to audiences of all ages, making it the perfect outing for families, friends, or even a captivating date night. So, if you find yourself yearning for a night of wonder, laughter, and unforgettable memories, don't miss the opportunity to experience Magic & Mayhem Live. This is not just a magic show; it's a celebration of the human spirit, the joy of imagination, and the thrill of being alive. - Hollywood Loves Pickleball: The Game Is Sweeping The City & The Nation
Hollywood Loves Pickleball: The Game Is Sweeping The City & The Nation May 17, 2024 Share Pickleball, a quirky-sounding name for a sport that's sweeping across the globe, is a delightful blend of Tennis, Badminton, and Ping Pong. With its origins dating back to the mid-20th century, this fast-paced game has captured the hearts of people of all ages and fitness levels. In a community gathering marked by enthusiasm and anticipation last week, City of Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy welcomed residents to the unveiling of the revamped Stan Goldman Memorial Park. Joined by locals, community figures, and dedicated workers, Mayor Levy underscored the significance of the park's enhancements, particularly the addition of new Pickleball Courts. Stan Goldman Park is a 12 acre passive park which runs along a canal and Interstate 95, connecting Johnson Street and Hollywood Boulevard. The park features a fitness trail, fishing area, playground, picnic areas, dog park, the newly expanded Pickleball Courts, a skatepark and restrooms. It was named after Late City Commissioner Stan Goldman who was a city commissioner for eight years. He was a longtime advocate for the park and worked to expand it. The park was dedicated to him in 1986. The Pickleball Courts expansion was made possible by a capital investment of nearly $300,000 capital injection, with project management led by the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts and the Design & Construction Management Department. Local pride was evident in the involvement of Merrick Industrial Management Corporation, a Hollywood-based contractor tasked with bringing the vision to life. Their contribution underscores a commitment to enhancing the community they call home. How It Started Pickleball traces its roots back to Bainbridge Island, Washington, in 1965. It all began when Joel Pritchard, a congressman, and his friend Bill Bell returned home one afternoon to find their families bored and restless. In an attempt to entertain them, they rummaged through their garage and found some Ping Pong Paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a Badminton court. Little did they know, this impromptu invention session would lead to the birth of a new sport. Experimenting with various rules and equipment, they created a game that combined elements of Badminton, Tennis, and Ping Pong. They lowered the Badminton Net, modified the paddles, and adopted a plastic ball with holes. As the game evolved, the founders named it after the Pritchard family's dog, Pickles, who had a habit of chasing after stray balls. From its humble beginnings in a backyard on Bainbridge Island, Pickleball quickly gained popularity among friends and neighbors. Within a few years, it spread to other parts of the United States and eventually across the globe. Today, Pickleball is played in community centers, retirement communities, schools, and parks worldwide. Here Are The Rules Pickleball is played on a Badminton-sized court with a modified Tennis Net. The rules are relatively simple, making it accessible to players of all skill levels. Here's a brief overview of how the game is played: Equipment: Pickleball is played with a paddle made of wood, graphite, or composite materials and a plastic ball with holes, similar to a Wiffle Ball. Court: The court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, with a net height of 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center. It's divided into two halves by a centerline and further divided into service courts by a non-volley zone or "kitchen" area. Serve: The game begins with an underhand serve diagonally across the net. The server must keep one foot behind the baseline and serve the ball into the opposing service court. Volleys: Players cannot volley (hit the ball without it bouncing) while standing in the non-volley zone, also known as the kitchen. This rule prevents players from dominating the game with aggressive net play. Scoring: Pickleball is typically played to 11 points, and the winning team must win by at least two points. Points can only be scored by the serving team. Faults: Common faults include hitting the ball out of bounds, stepping into the non-volley zone while volleying, or serving into the net. Health Benefits Beyond its entertainment value, Pickleball offers a host of health benefits that contribute to its growing popularity among people of all ages. Here are some of the ways in which playing Pickleball can improve Physical and Mental Well-Being: Cardiovascular Health: Pickleball is a dynamic, fast-paced sport that requires constant movement and quick reflexes. Playing Pickleball elevates the heart rate, improves cardiovascular endurance, and burns calories, making it an excellent aerobic exercise. Muscle Strength and Endurance: The repetitive nature of Pickleball strokes, such as swinging the paddle and moving around the court, helps build muscle strength and endurance, particularly in the arms, shoulders, legs, and core. Balance and Coordination: Pickleball involves a combination of hand-eye coordination, footwork, and spatial awareness. Regular play can enhance balance, coordination, and agility, which are essential for everyday activities and injury prevention. Joint Health: Unlike high-impact sports like Basketball or running, Pickleball is relatively low-impact, putting less Stress on the Joints. This makes it an ideal option for individuals with Joint issues or those looking for a gentler form of exercise. Social Interaction: Pickleball is as much a social activity as it is a sport. Whether playing doubles or singles, it provides opportunities for social interaction, camaraderie, and community building. Many players form lasting friendships both on and off the court. Stress Reduction: Engaging in Physical Activity releases Endorphins, Neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and well-being. The social aspect of Pickleball, combined with the enjoyment of the game itself, can help reduce Stress and improve overall Mental Health. Pickleball's journey from a backyard pastime to a global phenomenon is a testament to its appeal and accessibility. With its simple rules, affordable equipment, and health benefits, it's no wonder that Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a novice looking for a fun way to stay active, Pickleball offers something for everyone. So grab a paddle, hit the court, and experience the joy of Pickleball for yourself! Athletics, Coding, and The Arts: Summertime Camps & Activities Enriching The Lives of Kids in The Community By Joyce R. Forchion June 13, 2022 Share The year 2022 is progressing at an accelerated speed that has left many parents in a perpetual state of disbelief. Not long ago, Moms and Dads were in a frenzy, scrambling around parking lots and lining up in chain stores during the holidays to purchase the latest gadgets and gifts for their children. Then spring arrived, accompanied by a renewed sense of focus on homework, carpooling, bake sales, and extracurricular activities. In unbelievable fashion, parents are now faced with the emergence of summer and challenged with some grappling decisions of where to leave their children while they work. Aventura schools have closed so now it's time to make way for the sleepy summer season, which local summer camp programs are available for swift enrollment? With well-established values of health, wellness, and education permeating the City, most Aventura parents remain concerned about the safety and wellbeing of their children during the summer months. The City of Aventura’s Community Recreation Center offers a pretty thorough listing of activities specifically designed for their youth Summer Camp Programs, which are scheduled from June 13 to August 12. Along with a General Camp created for kids ranging from age 5 to 12, there are also topical programs available for children interested in a special subject, such as art, marine biology, dance, and STEM. Sports programs are also extremely popular as the City offers instruction in soccer, tennis, and basketball. Some of the daytime programs include concentrations in LEGO robotics, 3D Roblox development, and YouTube channel creation. More details can be found at: https://www.codeninjas.com Does your child have dreams of starring in a stage play or musical? Let The Good Times Roll October 3, 2024 Share For A Great Cause During South Florida's Beach Ball 2024 - The YMCA of South Florida kicks off the fall season with its annual Beach Ball, presented by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1 Seminole Way, in Hollywood. The Beach Ball benefits the water safety and drowning prevention programs at the YMCA. The YMCA of South Florida kicks off the fall season with its annual Beach Ball, presented by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1 Seminole Way, in Hollywood. The Beach Ball benefits the water safety and drowning prevention programs at the YMCA. The YMCA’s Beach Ball is one of the hottest social events to kick off the season, with more than 600 philanthropic and business professionals in attendance. Guests are encouraged to dress to the theme, “Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler” (Let the Good Times Roll) During the evening guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, dinner, live musical entertainment, dancing and a live and silent auction. Proceeds from the Beach Ball supports Financial Assistance for Aquatics programming so that anyone, regardless of their ability to pay, can come to the Y to learn water safety. Unfortunately, South Florida leads the nation in childhood drownings, and the Y’s mission is to work with the community to stem this tide. “Just because the calendar changes to fall, does not mean our children and families are safe from drowning, particularly here in South Florida,” said YMCA of South Florida CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “Our programs continue to have an impact on local communities, providing swim lessons and water safety education to more than 175,000 children and their families. We can only do that with the generous support from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and all our Beach Ball sponsors and guests. Together we can save lives.” For only $125 per child, the Y teaches a proven, eight-lesson drowning prevention course that empowers children to learn to swim and develop the confidence needed to be safe in and around water. A limited number of sponsorships for Beach Ball 2024 are still available, including Ruby, Gold and Silver sponsorship options for $7,500, $5,000 and $3,000, respectively. Florida leads the country in child drownings of all ages, with Broward and Miami-Dade counties reporting the most drowning deaths in the state. At least 40% of children have little or no swimming ability, a figure which rises to 64% among some minority groups. In addition, for every child who loses their life to drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries. The Y’s swimming programs are paramount because formal swimming lessons reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%. Annually, more than 25,000 children and adults are taught drowning prevention and water safety techniques at the YMCA of South Florida. Many of these lessons are funded through the Y’s Aquatic Financial Assistance Program, making them accessible to all. The Y has an eight-lesson drowning prevention program, where children learn to be safe in and around the water. The Y’s Mobile Aquatics program also travels to low-income neighborhoods to teach water safety to children and their caregivers. In addition to presenting sponsor Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Beach Ball 2024 is supported by Brown & Brown Insurance Miami-Dade, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Bacardi USA, Publix Super Markets Charities, Related Group, Spirit Airlines, Miami Herald, and Milner, among many others. They Fought for This Country. They Shouldn't Have to Leave It to Heal. By Aaron Seibert Jul 24, 2026 Veterans With Severe PTSD And Depression Are Increasingly Traveling Overseas For Treatments They Cannot Legally Access In The United States. After exhausting medications and conventional treatments, many are traveling to clinics in countries like Mexico to pursue psychedelic-assisted treatments. Others are seeking underground providers outside any regulated medical system. That should concern everyone -- not because these treatments are necessarily unsafe, but because Veterans are being pushed outside the safeguards of the American healthcare system to access them. If promising medicines exist, the United States has a responsibility to study them and, if they prove safe and effective, make them available through a regulated system here at home. Today, too many Veterans have nowhere safe to turn. Seventeen Veterans die by suicide each day in the United States. Many more live with PTSD and depression that existing treatments fail to address. These are stubborn, complex conditions. Many Veterans spend years cycling through medications, therapy programs, and referrals with little meaningful relief. It has been more than 25 years since the United States has approved a new treatment for PTSD. With conventional treatments failing, some Veterans are traveling overseas to access psychedelic-assisted treatments being used abroad. Veterans are navigating unfamiliar providers and inconsistent standards because they believe these treatments may offer their best chance at recovery. But seeking care abroad comes with a lot of risks. For starters, it's harder to verify if a provider has a legitimate medical license or credentials. Many of these clinics operate outside the oversight and safeguards of the U.S. medical system. As CBS News has reported, there are no standardized health screenings before treatment, required monitoring protocols, or requirements to track adverse effects. That wouldn't be the case on American soil. It is time to create a safe, regulated pathway for Veterans to access these medicines within the protections of the American medical system. For decades, skepticism surrounding psychedelic compounds largely shut down research in the United States. But over the past twenty years, that has begun to change. Major academic institutions have restarted carefully controlled clinical studies. Governments and regulators are beginning to respond. In 2023, Australia became the first country to permit limited clinical use of MDMA and psilocybin under strict psychiatric supervision. U.S. policymakers have recently shown greater openness to expanding psychedelic research. The clinical evidence continues to grow. Psilocybin medicine has produced rapid reductions in symptoms of major depression. MDMA-assisted treatment has shown substantial reductions in PTSD symptoms. In one trial, 67% of participants no longer met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD after treatment. These treatments are being held to the same scientific and regulatory standards applied to any other medicine seeking approval. Nothing should move forward without rigorous FDA review. But if research continues to demonstrate strong results, Veterans should not be forced to leave the country to access care that may help them heal. Veterans are already seeking these treatments. The real question is where -- and under what conditions -- they receive them. They deserve the safest option. Aaron Q. Seibert serves as a Wounded Warrior Liaison, host of the "Combat Vet Vision" podcast, Vice President of the Warrior Built Foundation, and heads the West Coast offices of the PTSD Foundation of America. He served three combat tours as a Navy Corpsman and is the recipient of a Purple Heart. A version of this piece originally ran in Townhall. Previous Next
