North Miami Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The City of North Miami celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a vibrant tapestry of events showcasing the artistry, customs and rooted pride of Hispanic and Latino culture. Festivities have officially kick-off with an opening reception and art unveiling earlier this month.
The 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month theme is "Forjando Nuestro Futuro Juntos!" Each year, North Miami's Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration pays homage to the preservation of Hispanic and Latino culture through a series of events organized by a committee of staff volunteers. North Miami's 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month Honorary Committee Co-Chairwomen are Councilwoman Kassandra Timothe, MPA, District 2, and Elected City Clerk Vanessa Joseph, Esq.
"Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultural contributions of our Hispanic and Latino communities that have inspired North Miami. This year, we are excited to honor those traditions while creating spaces for learning, unity, and joy for all residents," said Timothe.
"North Miami's Hispanic Heritage Month events are a vibrant celebration of the diversity and pride that define our community. We invite everyone to join us in honoring the heritage, customs, and stories that make this month so special," said Joseph.
This year's festivities captivated residents and visitors alike, starting with the 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off, in North Miami's City Hall Council Chamber on September 10th. Artist Rosa "Cocó" Henriquez was honored with a proclamation in recognition of her creative contributions that include a variety of artforms including landscapes, botanicals, structures, embroidery and other mediums rooted in themes related to culture, place and identity.
Dance enthusiasts of all levels are invited to the Hispanic Heritage Dance Classes led by Alejandra Fontao of the Miami Dance Center, at MOCA Plaza, 770 Northeast 125th Street, North Miami, Florida 33161. Participants will have the chance to learn Cumbia on Wednesday, September 25th, both at 5:30 p.m. Entry is free.
The North Miami Public Library's next Literary Lunch and Learn Book Talk is set for Friday, September 27th, at 12:00 p.m. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, this session will feature “The Vulnerables,” by acclaimed author Sigrid Nunez! The Hispanic Heritage Month edition of JAZZ at MOCA will feature two-time Latin Grammy Award-nominee David Lucca y Los Clasicos, on Friday, September 27th, at 7:00 p.m., at MOCA Plaza. Come dance the night away under the stars, to a live Big Band Salsa Style performance.
Additional Hispanic Heritage Dance Classes for Bachata and Salsa are scheduled for Tuesday, October 1st and Tuesday, October 15th, at Black Box Miami, located at 12355 Northeast 13th Avenue, North Miami, Florida 33161. These immersive cultural dance experiences are free and will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m.
Hispanic Heritage Month Storytime at the Library will occur Wednesday, October 2nd, at 4:00 p.m., with Major Kessler Brooks, of the North Miami Police Department. Bring the kids for an afternoon of captivating storytelling and fun activity; this is a wonderful opportunity to spark creativity and community connection. You’re invited to Hispanic Heritage Dominos Night, on Friday, October 4th, at 6:30 p.m., at El Kiosko Latin Café. This family-friendly evening of dominoes and delicious food offers fun for all ages in a relaxed atmosphere. El Kiosko Latin Cafe is located at 13290 West Dixie Highway, North Miami, Florida 33161.
Gear up for the Get In Gear Community Bike Ride on Saturday, October 12th, at 8:00 a.m. Cyclists of all levels will roll out of MOCA Plaza together for a journey through North Miami. Following the Bike Ride, experience the vibrant energy of Hispanic and Latino Miami. Following the Bike Ride, experience the vibrant energy of Hispanic and Latin markets at the City of North Miami's first-ever NoMi Tianguis. Enjoy live music while supporting local entrepreneurs; and discover unique treasures and flavors at this pop-up market. To bring the 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month festivities to a close, join the City of North Miami in honoring local Latino and Hispanic trailblazers at Noche de Honores, on Saturday, October 19th, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Following the ceremony, enjoy an evening of live music, dancing and delightful food under the moonlit sky at the annual La Gran Fiesta, at MOCA Plaza, 770 Northeast 125th Street, North Miami, Florida 33161.
