South Florida Sun Times

Jun 5, 2025

Rainy Season Is Here, And With It Comes The Increased Risk Of Localized Flooding From Heavy Storms. City Crews Work Hard To Keep More Than 157 Miles Of Storm Pipes And 4,900 Catch Basins Clear, But You Can Help Too, Right In Your Own Neighborhood.

Adopting a catch basin is simple. Just sign up, check on your adopted basin once a month, and clear away any debris as needed. Then send in proof of your cleanup to earn points toward rewards. It’s an easy way to help reduce flooding and protect our waterways.

You can also help by properly disposing of coconuts, lawn clippings, and yard waste. Toss coconuts in your garbage cart and never sweep or blow debris into the street or storm drains.

Need to report a catch basin issue? Call the Underground Utilities Division at: (954) 921-3046.

Flood Safety Tips

Call 911 if flooding creates an emergency in your home, such as a fire. Never drive through flooded streets. Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Be careful with electrical cords, appliances, and outlets if water has entered your home. Avoid walking in standing flood water. It may contain harmful bacteria, sharp objects, or other hidden hazards. Keep kids and pets away from it too. If you experience flood damage, contact your homeowner's or auto insurance company right away for guidance on documentation and cleanup.
