South Florida’s Summer Weather Patterns Bring Increased Risks From Extreme Heat, Heavy Rainfall, Flooding, And Tropical Storms. While Hurricane Season Officially Runs From June 1st Through November 30th, Both Heat And Rain Seasons Are Already Underway Through October 31st, Making Now The Time To Prepare And Stay Informed.
High temperatures and humidity can quickly lead to heat-related illness, while frequent afternoon storms may cause rapid street flooding and hazardous conditions. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, check on vulnerable neighbors and elderly loved ones, avoid driving through flooded roadways, and stay clear of downed power lines.
Preparing ahead of Hurricane Season can also help reduce stress and improve safety if a storm impacts the area. Hurricanes can bring damaging winds, storm surge, flooding, power outages, and disruptions to essential services. Residents should review Evacuation Zones, update Emergency Plans, and prepare Emergency Supply Kits with enough food, water, medications, and essentials to remain self-sufficient for at least seven days.
Emergency Plans should account for all household members, including pets and anyone with special medical or transportation needs. Important documents such as insurance information, medical records, and identification should be stored in a waterproof container or backed up electronically.
Residents are also encouraged to document household belongings with photos and maintain an updated list of emergency contacts and medications.
