Traveling Exhibition Comes To Hollywood - The Art And Culture Center/Hollywood Hosts The Prestigious Southern Prize And State Fellowship For Visual Artists

October 16, 2024

The 2024 Southern Prize and State Fellowships for Visual Arts exhibition will be on display from October 19th, 2024 through January 5th, 2025 at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, before touring to three additional locations across the Southern states.

The traveling exhibition features nine artists from nine states selected by a national jury that will receive a fellowship award from South Arts to create greater cultural equity, diversity of artistic expression, and accessibility to the arts. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, October 19th from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and there will be FREE Admission.

Now in its 8th year, this award honors outstanding visual artists from the South, showcasing the region's creativity and talent. These recipients demonstrate that the South is a thriving arts hub, producing work that rivals the best globally. The Florida Fellowship is awarded to Elliot and Erick Jimenez, identical twins and first generation Cuban-Americans born and raised in Miami. Additional Fellows represent Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Suzette M. Surkamer, President and CEO, South Arts stated, “The 2024 Southern Prize and State Fellowships for Visual Arts recipients are a powerful testament to the artistry of our region. Their work is a deep reflection of our time, powerfully telling individual stories of Immigration Status, Disability, Race, sense of place, and more. Each State Fellow has the talent to convey so much through their creativity, and they collectively build toward our better understanding of an existential question that drives and fascinates us - what does it mean to be an artist in the South?”

Each of the State Fellows receives a $5,000 Award. The Southern Prize for Visual Arts Finalist receives an additional $10,000, and the Southern Prize for Visual Arts Winner receives an additional $25,000. Southern Prize recipients also receive a two-week residency with The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences. Since the inception of this program, South Arts has awarded $640,000 to 72 individual artists to date, helping them advance their careers and reach a larger, well-deserved audience.

This investment in the artists of our region is made possible through the generous support of many organizations and individuals.
