Hallandale Beach Residents: There Are Programs To Help If You Are In Need

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of Low-Income Americans, including elderly people, by providing them with Emergency Food Assistance at no cost. Through TEFAP, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) purchases a variety of Nutritious, High-Quality USDA Foods and makes those foods available to state distributing agencies.

Food Programs
The Human Services Department offers two Food Distribution programs that provide temporary assistance to residents of Hallandale Beach. The Food Pantry at The Hepburn Center houses a pantry consisting of canned items, staple foods and meats available to those in need. The pantry is open Monday through Friday, but you must see a Social Worker before receiving any food. Individuals are interviewed to ensure they meet eligibility requirements. The Center accepts donations from individuals, groups/organizations, and businesses. USDA Monthly Food Distribution Program - This is a Federal entitlement program that provides food items to individuals and families the first Wednesday of each month from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Hepburn Center.

Food Stamp, Medicaid & Cash Assistance
ACCESS Florida is a service the City of Hallandale Beach provides in partnership with the Department of Children and Families. You can apply on-line for Food Stamps, Cash Assistance and Medicaid. If you need to use a computer, one is available for you at the Hepburn Center. If required, a Social Worker is always available to assist Hallandale Beach residents with DCF Services. Housing Assistance
The City of Hallandale Beach Human Services Department provides housing and financial counseling to assist individuals and families in the acquisition of a home or rental property. Referrals are made to government housing authorities, rental assistant programs and homeless shelters. For additional information or appointments, call: (954) 457-1460.

Senior Services
The Senior Services Section provides services to adults ages 60 and older. A Social Worker is available to provide information and referrals, Case Management, Job Assistance, Emergency Food, Rental and Utility Payment Assistance, HIV/AIDS Testing, Health Services and Outreach. ACCESS Florida, you can apply on-line for Food Stamps, Cash Assistance and Medicaid Services which are free. For additional information or appointments, call: (954) 457-1460. Social Services are available at the Hepburn Center, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Individuals who request assistance through Senior Services are required to participate in an intake and assessment process, and must show Proof Of Identity, Proof Of Address, Income Verification, Proof Of Citizenship or Legal Residency Status and any other documentation that will show proof for requested services.

Senior Activity Center
The Hepburn Center operates a program Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for residents 60 years or older. A comprehensive schedule of services and activities are provided to enhance the ability of senior citizens to maintain their Independence, improve Socialization Skills, provide Counseling, Medical, Housing and Legal Aid.

Program services include: Transportation to and from the Center, Continental Breakfast, Arts and Crafts, Computer Classes, Music, Enhance Fitness, Education, Forums, Field Trips, Nutritious Lunch, and Special Events.

A Social Worker is assigned to provide Counseling, Case Management and Referrals for seniors in need of services. You must register for the programs to participate. Please contact Senior Services at: (954) 457-1460.

The Human Services Department provides classes for older adults 60 years and older who may not have Computer Skills. Training is conducted by a certified instructor from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. every Monday. Classes are available for: Windows, Microsoft Word and Applications, Advanced Word Processing, Internet and Email. The Hallandale Beach Human Services Department is housed in the Hepburn Center, a Multi-Purpose Facility named in honor of Austin Hepburn, Jr., a Hallandale Beach Police Officer who lost his life in the line of duty. The Center provides a wide array of comprehensive services to meet the needs of the Community.
