Want To Live Abroad? Apply To Participate In The Japan Exchange And Teaching Program

November 17, 2022

Up-and-coming professionals from Florida with an interest in living and working in Japan may apply to participate in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) in which participants from around the globe work in schools, boards of education, and government offices throughout Japan and enjoy the opportunity to be immersed in Japanese culture. Applications are currently being accepted through Friday, November 18th, 2022.

Facilitated in Florida by the Consulate General of Japan in Miami, JET is the only teaching exchange program managed by the Government of Japan.

“The JET Program allows young professionals to live and work in Japan while also representing the United States as cultural ambassadors,” said Christopher Brickey, JET Program Coordinator for the Consulate General of Japan in Miami. “Most participants serve as Assistant Language Teachers in public and private schools, although there are also JET opportunities as Coordinators for International Relations to serve as interpreters.”

Assistant Language Teachers’ duties in K-12 Schools may include assisting Japanese teachers in foreign language classes, supervising foreign language activities, preparation of class materials and engagement in local international exchange activities.

Coordinators for International Relations are required to have at least semi-advanced Japanese language ability and be capable of editing and translating publications into a foreign language, assist in designing and implementing international exchange programs, and assist with hosting official guests from abroad and interpreting at events.

Participants receive a contract for one year and may renew up to four times to spend a maximum of five years in the program. Among other eligibility criteria, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree by June 29, 2023, be a U.S. citizen, have excellent pronunciation and other standard language skills, as well as the desire to adapt to living and working in Japan.
