Introducing Dr. Amir’s Weight Loss & Metabolism Center
October 6, 2021
I have had the pleasure of serving the South Florida community for the last 18 years. As a dedicated, double board certified internist, I have seen the effect of weight on health and longevity. Most recently, I have seen Covid- 19’s effect on health on the overweight and persons suffering from the disease of obesity. Increased risk of severe illness, hospitalization, ventilator use and death are affected by weight status. Eighty percent of hospitalized patients are currently with increased weight status.
Even our youth who has seen obesity rates reaching 18% pre-pandemic have now increased due to secondary effects of the pandemic. Moved by the premature and preventable death of many teachers, community members, colleagues and family members, I decided to dedicate my practice to treating the overweight population and those suffering from the disease of obesity. Excess weight promotes and worsens many other conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, depression, and sleep apnea. I aspire to treat weight first and all other conditions will be improved or cured. It is my mission to help treat the now recognized chronic disease of obesity in my new Hallandale location.
As many of you know and experienced first hand, weight loss attempts are usually initially effective but transform into a vicious cycle of losing and gaining. Did you wonder why hunger increases when starting to diet and or exercise? This is no coincidence but nature at work prevents us from losing weight. As the human species evolved, weight preserving protections were designed to withstand famine, stress, and natural disasters. Our biology hinders us from losing weight. Only a small fraction of dieters are able to lose and maintain weight loss. Even patients who underwent weight loss surgery have regained weight reaching the five year anniversary and some even gained more than initial weight prior to surgery.
In the last several decades, science has evolved and has led to many new developments that explain the mechanisms of weight gain and the body’s natural built in protections to keep the status quo, despite diet and exercise. Newly developed treatments for weight gain and weight loss failure are available and new and individualized options emerged. Under-standing that each person requires a unique approach, numerous medication options, procedures or another endoscopic procedure may be warranted. Although some in the medical community still play the blame game putting the responsibility on the patient not keeping up with diet and exercise, many are realizing that weight gain and obesity are not a matter of energy balance, also known as calories vs calories expended and often require trained medical intervention.
Dr. Amir's Weight Loss and Metabolism is a different approach to managing the overweight state, now termed a chronic disease. I use an individualized plan with targeted lifestyle interventions and when appropriate medications are the mainstay. I also screen for possible inherited conditions leading to weight gain status when appropriate. There is no one size fits all!
Incorporating my vast medical knowledge and advanced training in the field of obesity from Harvard and Cornell, I treat each person with the best care science provides. I will guide and follow you to prevent the inevitable weight preserving measures fighting against your weight loss.
This is a continuous care program not a quick fix that cannot be maintained. How long can one adhere to the latest fad: very low calorie, keto, cabbage diet, or low carb diet? The answer is few to none.
Let me help you reach and maintain your weight goals for better health and longevity.
Currently accepting new patients at my new office in Hallandale.
