Every Day, Loving Pets Wait Behind Kennel Doors For Someone To See Past The Noise, The Uncertainty, And The Temporary Sadness Of Shelter Life—And Into The Loyal Hearts Beating Within. At The Humane Society of Broward County, Two Special Companions Are Hoping Their Next Chapter Begins With You. Sweet Bear And Charming Kitty Have Each Lost The Homes They Knew Through No Fault Of Their Own. Now, They’re Waiting For Families Who Will Make Their Wishes Come True.
Sweet Bear (ID 713452): From Heartbreak to Hope
At just four years old and 34 pounds, Bear is the perfect midsize companion—big enough for adventure, small enough to fit comfortably into most homes. This handsome Australian Shepherd mix found himself at the shelter after his family went through a divorce and, heartbreakingly, no one could keep him. It’s a story shelter staff see too often: life changes for people can mean upheaval for pets.
The transition has been especially hard on Bear. Australian shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and sensitivity, and Bear embodies all three. The shelter environment, with its constant chorus of barking dogs and unfamiliar faces, makes him nervous. He tends to be shy in his kennel, quietly observing the world around him and waiting for reassurance.
But talk to those who knew him before, and a different picture emerges.
According to his previous family, Bear is a well-mannered, affectionate companion who is good with other dogs, cats, and children. He is potty trained and accustomed to home life. Once he feels secure, his true personality shines: energetic, playful, and eager to engage.
Like many Australian shepherds, Bear is extremely active once he settles in. This breed thrives on physical exercise and mental stimulation. They are often stars in agility competitions, herding trials, and advanced obedience work. Bear may very well excel in agility, flyball, or any activity that lets him stretch his legs and use his sharp mind. If you’re a runner, hiker, or someone who enjoys long walks in the Florida sunshine, Bear could be your perfect partner.
He especially loves playing fetch and will need sturdy, durable toys that can keep up with his enthusiasm. A fenced yard where he can safely zoom and explore would be a dream come true. Even more important, though, is a family committed to including him in their daily lives—whether that means weekend adventures, training sessions, or simply relaxing together after a busy day.
Because of his sensitive nature, Bear would do best with patient adopters who understand that trust takes time. A calm introduction to his new home, consistent routines, and positive reinforcement will help him blossom. The reward? A fiercely loyal, intelligent dog who will bond deeply with his people and shower them with devotion.
Bear has already endured the confusion of losing his home. What he needs now is stability, compassion, and someone willing to see the incredible dog he truly is.
Kitty (ID 713903): A Gentle Soul Seeking Security
While Bear’s world changed due to divorce, Kitty’s life shifted when his owner was deployed. Military deployments can be long and uncertain, and sometimes beloved pets must find new homes as a result. Kitty didn’t do anything wrong—he simply needs another cat lover to give him the stability and affection he deserves.
Kitty is looking for a somewhat quieter household. Younger children tend to startle him, and when he feels overwhelmed, he prefers to retreat to a safe hiding spot. For that reason, a home with older, respectful kids would be ideal. In the right environment, Kitty’s sweet personality truly shines.
He may also do well with a well-mannered dog who already knows that felines are friends, not foes. Slow, careful introductions are always key, but Kitty has the potential to adapt beautifully to a multi-pet home.
Once he settles in, don’t be surprised if Kitty becomes your little greeter. Shelter staff believe that in a comfortable setting, he may meet you at the door and rub against your legs in a warm, affectionate welcome. That gentle nudge and soft purr can turn even the most stressful day into something manageable.
And if you’re the kind of person who likes to spoil your cat with treats, Kitty is fully on board. He isn’t picky and appreciates a good snack. Treat time could quickly become a bonding ritual between you and your new feline friend.
Like many cats adjusting to change, Kitty may need a bit of patience in the beginning. Providing cozy hiding spots, a consistent routine, and plenty of positive reinforcement will help him feel secure. In return, you’ll gain a devoted companion whose quiet affection speaks volumes.
Opening Your Heart—and Your Home
Both Bear and Kitty are reminders that pets don’t control the circumstances that bring them to shelters. Divorce. Deployment. Major life changes. Through it all, they remain ready to love again.
When you adopt, you’re not just gaining a pet—you’re giving an animal a second chance. You’re transforming uncertainty into stability, anxiety into comfort, and loneliness into belonging.
Bear dreams of a yard to run in and a family to call his own. Kitty hopes for a calm home, a sunny window, and someone whose legs he can lovingly wind around at the end of the day.
Could that someone be you?
